Just in off the net.

America has a lot fewer functioning Ford Explorers these days.
The number one vehicle destroyed under the Cash for Clunkers program, the Transportation Department says, was the Ford Explorer (1998 edition). Number two, the Ford Explorer (1997). Number Three...you guessed it. The '96 model.



The top eight, Jalopnik reports, were all SUVs. In fact, they were all various editions of the Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee. A pair late ‘90s of minivans, the ‘97 Ford Windstar and '99 Dodge Grand Caravan, round out the top ten.
Domestics claimed a decent share of the new vehicle sales generated by the program as well. The Detroit News notes, "Detroit's automakers accounted for 47 percent of the first 80,000 ‘Cash for Clunkers' sales, the Obama administration said today...which is above their overall share in the auto market of about 45 percent." The top-selling vehicle under the program so far is the Ford Focus. "Four of the top 10-selling vehicles are manufactured by Detroit's Big Three. Of non-Big Three purchases, the Transportation Department's preliminary analysis suggests that more than half of these new vehicles were manufactured in the United States."



Autoblog adds, "White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says the average fuel economy increase so far is 9.4 mpg; a 61% increase." Based on the first 80,000 sales, "83% of the vehicles traded in have been trucks, while 60% of the vehicles purchased under the program have been cars."

On the other hand, you could say something for their longevity that they are still on the road. . .

Last night I was out for a jog and someone went past me in a late 90's Explorer. That thing had more squeaks and groans than a combination retirement home and box spring factory. I was reminded of the old adage, "GM/ Ford/ Chrysler cars run bad far longer than other cars run." That thing was in need of a serious suspension lube job and it sounded like the muffler was going the way of the dodo, but it was going.

The Explorer is a model from Ford that I've never liked. I loved my 89 F-150 and my 2000 Focus HB. They both ran great and had only minor repairs on them.

i have to back up the explorer, the only reason they are on cash for clunkers is cause they get horrible gas mileage. if you read the fine print the vehicle has to get less then 18 mpf combined city and highway for it to qualify for cash for clunkers----the explorer get 15 ish.....if you think about it our liberty's they get 17 ish--except you crd guys.. it says nothing about the age of the vehicle. my buddy drives a fully loaded 1997 explorer with the 5.0 liter 302 in it and it has 225,000 miles and it is his daily driver---it has been in the family since new and nothing has ever gone bad---it has even been in two wrecks---girl drivers----------other then that it is doing great so +1 on if you can afford the gas drive it.

I actually went on the CARS website and then the fueleconomy.gov subsite...entered all the info for my 1988 Olds 98...did not qualify. I entered the info for my 03 KJ...it did qualify. Think about it...why is the cutoff 18mpg...why not 20...can you say I hate SUVs and Trucks? That is what truly drives the individuals behind the Cash for Clunkers program.

in other words, theres people drawing fat checks to make the whole program look real good on paper

I wish they didnt let the deal apply to Honda, Toyota and Hyundai I think it should have only been for the American auto makers :? :roll:

But then that leaves out a whole bunch of " American made autos" since lots of Honda's/Yotas are mmade here so where do you stop?

dang I forgot about that, I would say American made but that would still trow some out, the real American autos, Chevy, GMC, Cadillac, Jeep, Ford, Dodge, Plymoth, Lincoln, Mercury, etc.

but some of those 'american' car companies are parented or whatever ya call it, by german automakers or whatever, kinda like Daimler-Chrysler or what have you


honestly, i've pretty much given up on knowing who makes/owns what/where

even some of the fords come with foreign owned and produced engines that were a huge bulk of the contract price for those vehicles

There is why instead of giving out the trillions of dollars of Stimulus, Omnibus, and Obamacare bucks they should just have cut every American citizens a check for $10K or whatever it worked out to be... :lol: :lol: 8) 8) That would have been a true stimulus...although better yet would have been to cut taxes but I'll stop there lest this thread gets locked for discussions of the political nature... :twisted:
