Post subject:	Computer people! I needs helpin'!!!
Okay, so I have my very own CABLE INTERNET starting tomorrow... Problems is, I want to hook up a Laptop, and My frickin XBox up to it. How should I go about doing this. I know the guy is going to come in and hook it all up, but is there anything special that I have to do to make cable internet accessable to these two things??? (TWCable/ROadrunner turbo to be specific). Is this somthing that I should invest in a wireless router? Is that what I'm looking for? They said I could make it wireless for an additional $12 a month, but I'm already "Renting" their modem. I just want some advice from you guys. I am extreemly Computer Illiterate. I know terms of things, just not what they do. I'm learnin slowly though.

Ohh yeah, BTW... Both the laptop, and the Xbox have wireless capabilities right now... I don't know if that means anyhting I just thought I would throw that in there.

you need to buy a router, that connects to your modem and then it sends a wireless signal to whatever devices you have set a code so no-one can steal it

Yeah, get a wireless router. Get either a Lynksys or Netgear. Belkin is another good one, but the first two are better. Or you could always hardwire your laptop and xbox to the modem but that will just be annoying and you will want the wireless capabilities. I love being able to take my laptop into the crapper and the garage and back yard and such.

Do you think 10 Mbps down 512 Kbps up Will be good enough to watch streaming Netflix, or play XBL games??? EDIT: It has some "Turd-bo boost" thing that puts it up to 16Mbps when doing somtihng or another...

those speeds will be more than adequate for streaming HD while everyone else in your house plays farmville or whatever, already got the wireless adapter for your xbox?

Yeah... I''ve been using it for a year or so now. Works great, but the people that lived above us moved, now I can't get a good signal. lol.

I believe "G" is the old standard and "N" is the newer standard for wireless networking. Also consider getting a range extender for the wireless router. We have a wireless router and when my wife tried to use the laptop upstairs, it often had a slow or intermittent signal. So we got a signal range extender. Remember, wireless works best with a "line of sight". Doors and walls can interrupt the signal.

Walk in, your in the living kitchen dining room. walk 15 feet your in the den bedroom bathroom hallway. 25 yards long. (I paced it off to see if I could shoot archery inside. lol. Put router on wall in hallway, you have that Line of Sight? Should work?

The N's have a longer distance and walls and such doesn't interfere as much. N's are much faster than G's as well and the N's are the new standard for routers. Like I said, look more towards the Linksys, netgear, and belkin, as those are the most up to date, fastest most reliable router.

Oh, and if you go to best buy or compusa and tell them your needs and such they'll be able to help you pick a certain model to best fit your needs. But looking at your needs in your apartment, you don't really need a fancy expensive router. You just need one that works good, is fast, and gets the job done without disconnecting a bunch of times.

when getting the N router just make sure to check the box for it's compatibilities you'll want one compatible with B G and N the belkin N high performance networking (looks like a surfboard cable modem with 2 antennas sticking out the top) is a pretty decent example of that for about 60 bucks some of the N routers only support N and G which might leave out some notebook wireless cards that are B only

For future reference.... Time Warner Cable is an excellent service. I have nothing but good things to say about them. The guy that came to install our modem, and what not, was pollite, and very helpful. We got the Road Runner Turbo package, and once everything was done, It works AWESOME!!!
