although - right now they're saying the base is still on lockdown

at least 12 dead and 31 wounded! :shock: THIS IS NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN ON OUR SOIL!!!!!!!!! These guys need our support and help.

Hubby just read a report from the AP - the shooter's not dead, but in stable condition under military guard...

...the whole thing makes you wonder what this world is coming to. :(

I spent a couple AT's there when I lived in TX and was part of an Army Guard unit there.

The question comes down to: Did he do it in the name of the Muslim religion or because he just cracked because he was deploying. With all of the info so far, it is sounding like the first option, but the second could have played a role.

I was stationed there for about 6 years ('93-'99), I'm still on active duty, and about to deploy for my 3rd year+ tour . Unfortunately, this instance doesn't surprise me too much. There are soldiers from all walks of life, from widely varied backgrounds and upbringing, with differing values serving in an army that is deployed almost as much as it's at home. The fact that this hasn't happened before is a testament to the intestinal fortitude and moral courage of our soldiers and to the services and support provided to our soldiers. That said, it was just a matter of time before an unstable soldier committed a heinous crime against his fellow soldiers in a garrison environment. I hate that this is true but there is no denying it.

On a side note, does anyone else find it tragically ironic that a mental health professional lost his mind?

Sadly, you're so right.

We were there together for a year or so. I was with 1st Tiger Brigade / 2nd Armored Div prior to and during Desert Shield / Desert Storm. After our return to Hood, we were deactivated in late April '91. i was then with 3rd Grey Wolf Brigade / 1st Cav until '94 when I called it quits.

We had a nut case in basic turn his M16 on a D.I. at the rifle range. Later we learned (not sure how accurate or truthful the aftermath story was) that the guy was dislusional and it was believed he wasn't actually aiming at the D.I. This D.I jumped the guy, disarming him. Supposedly a shot was fired into the air over the D.I's head. I was at the other end of the firing line and didn't know what happened until the line was locked down with the order to cease all fire. I have no idea what happened to the guy?

As for this wack-job Major - yes I do find it ironic. However as Tokyojoe eluded to, I am now hearing it was a combination of both. FWIW, seeing as the military hasn't executed in the last 48 years, I hope (assuming this guy survives?) he is tried in the civilian Texas Justice System. That way instead of (probably)spending life at Leavenworth, he'll be pushed into the "express lane" for Texas style execution.

Two soldier's dead (one female, one male) are from the Chicago area.

My Nephew serving in Iraq is based out of Fort Hood, his wife and daughter were off base when it happened, T.G.!

When I had my car repair business in a college town, I had customers that were Psychology Professors,. At least 3/4rds them were nuts them selves. I would say that only two out of the entire department weren't nuts.
I would expect the Wako rate among our Military would be much lower do to the discipline, dedication, and screening. But even then, there are some who will get through the best system ever created.

Sadly to say, I wasn't too surprised by the incident. I am a very recently medically-retired SFC/E-7 Infantryman and going thru the med-board process you sometimes "talk" to people. My wife used to work at our army hospital in the behavior health dept here at Fort Carson and yeah, a few of the health care providers were, I'll say a little off. But there are many who are true professionals and really care, just like our Soldiers. This guy, this Major, number one was a commissioned officer. He swore an oath, that is a bit more detailed than the one enlisted swear, but similar. His first mistake was once he started having dellusions of allah
( no offense meant) and he disagreed with US policy, you simply resign your commission, period. End of story. If that didn't work he could have gone to Canada like some of our fellow Soldiers have. But for an officer, and then an army phsyciatrist (sp) to do this. Someone screwed up with not coming forward with his verbal outbursts and his actions (chain of commmand) and the government semi investigated him for his crazy blogs, why wasn't anything done? His old evaluation was on TV (yeah that's supposed to be confidential) it mentioned his weird behavior and nothing was done. I've seen it before, very senior officers/very senior NCOs mess up, time to retire, mid level NCO or an enlisted Soldier mess up, Article 15, reduction to lowest rank, dishonorable discharge etc. Politics. Sadly this was preventable. I know Soldiers and family on that post and they deserve better. Oh and Wolf Blitzer at the beginning of this incident, really showed me why like most Soldiers I never liked news people, he really acted like a d*&^%bag. My opinion. Thoughts and prayers to families of fallen the wounded. it would be nice to see the govt exercise its right to execute a convicted Soldier of acts of treason, terrorism during wartime and seeing him executed, that would restore some faith in the system for me. :evil:
