Do you read the JP Magazine?

Since buying a Jeep I've been reading the JP Magazine. After reading it for three years and listening to it's editors rag on and on about the Liberty I've had enough. I'm no longer going to be buying it unless it has something worthwhile in it.

I know there are some people that support the magazine but I feel it's aimed for a specific group of people, not Liberty owners. How do you guys feel?

I have to say I do check out JP at the store, but I refuse to buy the magazine due to the "Richard HEAD" edditor's for not including the KJ as a real Jeep !! :furious:

Yes, they are butthead's regarding their coverage of Libb's and I don't really care for some of their smartass antics either. For me though, I also have a '47 CJ-2a and my wife drives a '97 Wrangler so we do take the mag because it's about the only real Jeep mag I have found.

Heck even the hardcore section on Pirate acknowledges the Liberty as a Jeep(barely but they do).

They(pirate4x4) liked your build. I think the magazine just reflects what most Jeep owners think about Libbys,I get more negative type comments from cj/tj/jk owners than any others,like that is the only 4x4 ever made or something.

Their tech, especially when they are talking historic stuff, is too often incorrect. What axles on what models, etc... They have also faked letters to the editor to crack on the Liberty. That is a no-class group.

I'd like to respond to this comment.

Nobody has ever criticized my Liberty to my face but I'm sure that at the beginning of any trail I've been on there are quiet mumblings of "what is that Liberty doing here?!" The only comments that I seem to hear are positive ones at the end of the trail. People are typically impressed what a Liberty can do :JEEPIN:

JP Magazine fakes "letters to the editor"?! I'm actually surprised they print the occasional negative comment.

For quite awhile a few years ago, they were begging for more letters. They were not getting them. So some very questionable letters started appearing. One was a guy cracking on the Liberty he tried to buy to haul drywall into the "woods of Washington DC" as part of his contracting business. He had previously used an XJ with "tons more room" that easily hauled drywall. :ROTFL:

He was wishing he had purchased a new 4runner to haul his drywall. Does anyone recall the '06 4runner? Drywall Hauler? :-)r

It got interesting on another forum with Cappa. Yes, they fake letters and/or print letters that they know to be BS.

Whenever I took the kj out, I have received comments from people about how surprised they were by its ability.

It is very disappointing to look threw an issue at a newsstand, an in a magazine that claims to be for all "JEEPS" find very little about our beloved KJ's. Maybe we should somehow send this thread on to them? If they printed more on KJ's maybe more aftermarket would follow suit.

I still boycott them, though I admit that I did buy the issue where my KJ showed up in Jeeps Shots (even if the printed the worst pic I sent them).

Cappa does not & will not care. Complaining to one of the always changing companies that own JP might be more worthwhile. But as far as I know he may not even be associated with JP anymore as I gave it up a few years ago. As magazines in general are hurting, and this has always been a fairly low budget second tier throw-together, the current owners may want to pay more attention to how Cappa is alienating potential subscribers if he is still there.

The only way to complain to a magazine - is to go through a copy
find advertisers that sell things you could use
write them and tell them that you won't buy from them because they support JP
include your favorite quotes from JP explaining why.
point out how many KJ's were made (I think it's close to a million)

and then buy from someone who does support KJ's and mention it.

aftermarket suppliers are a low margin business - advertising is expensive
if their advertising money is chasing away customers they won't continue

I browse through the rag at Books a Million. To me the only interesting parts are the news/rumors, and the reader's rides pics. Not nearly enough to justify 5 bucks.

I like the magazine....even when I see the "Anti Liberty" readers pics....I do learn a lot from it and I really like "Randy's Electrical Corner" :2cents:

I susbscribed to it a few years back when I got the KJ. i basically went to the book store, picked up every "subscription card" I could find for anything evenly remotely having to do with jeeps/offroad. i quickly decided that the magazine was way to "juvenile" and dropped it. problem is, most of the magazines that we do like are still part of the same publicshing group. So while you may hate that mag, buying any magazine from that publishing group is till, in a way, supporting them.

On the plus side, i was at a Jeep "builder" the other day (the guy builds custom crawlers) and during the day there were several customers that came in and said "what's that doing here?" about the KJ (not in a negative way, more like surprised to see one in a crawler shop). Shortly after, there were several of them underneath admiring the skid plates, my scrapes, 150k mileage, etc. Seemed to me any "real" Jeeper is more interested in the mechanics / capability of the vehicle as opposed to what it's named.

We did that last summer (several page thread about it)... That's how my KJ made it the Jan 10 issue. They even made the comment about the huge # of pics they recieved.

I know, I was also in the June issue. I think there were only 2 KK in there..... They haven't seen it since the "upgrade" :jester:
