Toyota Camry Not Running Right

Post subject:  Toyota Camry Not Running Right
My friend has a 2002 Toyota Camry with the 3.0L V6, and while sitting at idle the RPMs slowly go down until the car dies. It usually starts but it wouldnt earlier today, it didnt even try to turn over and it lost power to roll up the windows.

Any Ideas??

alternator or battery. try to jump it and if it stays running i would say the alt is fine and replace the battery. also take it down to an auto parts store and have em check the battery and alt for him.

there could be a floor mat stuck somewhere in the engine........

Check for vacuum leaks with a can of carburetor/throttle body cleaner. The engine will rev up if there is a vacuum leak when you hit the spot that is leaking.
Clean the throttle plate, it may be sticking, if the car has an idle speed controller (instead of a throttle actuator) that bypasses air around the throttle plate, clean it. Next, start pulling codes with an OBD II scanner, Harbor Freight sells one that works and is cheap. AutoZone, Advance, and O'Reilly will pull the codes for free, if you think they are smart enough at your store. Small towns and suburbs have smarter people behind the counter than big cities as a rule.
It could be other causes, but go for the cheap fix first. An 8 year old car is bound to have a vacuum leak or something gunked or gummed up, you won't hurt anything. Watch out for dealers or shops that want to start replacing parts until it is fixed.

I was thinking that it might be the alt, she just took it to walmart and they said the battery was fine. She said it runs fine when your giving it gas but if you stop and let it idle it just keeps going down until it hits 500 RPMs and then it dies.

I dont think it has thrown any codes yet, your right about the autozone, advance and oreillys around here its about a 50/50 chance.

I dont know if it has an idle speed controller or a throttle actuator, I havent really taken a good look at the car yet.
