And to also note, I was watching tv, and BREAKING NEWS comes on, in HD...I'm so sick and tired of these huge mistakes the oill company's are making, just as bad as the banking company's bonus to the CEOs...I just think they need to fix this lleak now, and lleave our waters alone! We only got one earth and we are destroying it! |

That whole situation continues to get worse by the minute. The Exxon Valdez spill is going to be a drop in the bucket when this is all said and done. The excuses and the delays etc etc are just unreal. |

Yes, so we need to tear up and/or down anything made of asphalt or concrete that is blighting our natural world and taking space where wildflowers can grow. Our houses should be returned to the earth to decay into a natural state and not be a blight on the landscape and a monument to the rape of our natural resources for our "convenience" of not living off of the land. We should each return to sustenance farming and hunting to support our needs as opposed to the huge factroy farms that make food cheap and plentiful. And we all promise here after to never operate an internal combustion engine again. Don't we? |

Well - maybe we could start with requiring the remote shutoff's that the rest of the world requires on offshore rigs - let's see $500,000 investment vs leaking a hundred million gallons of oil and then we could continue on toward having safety inspections - actually done by say - inspectors - maybe even independent inspectors.... and maybe even suggest that the folks running the rig - actually read some of the warnings that have been published over the last 10 years of deep water drilling. either that - or we could get all upset with Samuel Browne - "This British jerk thought he was doing the world a favor when he invented the first fuel-powered internal combustion engine in 1826. Almost two centuries later, America is incredibly fat and all our birds are covered in oil. Thanks a lot, Samuel." |

I thought the BP rig had remote shut offs and they and all the other safty features failed. I was told that there are manual overrides too, and that the people incharge of monitoring those systems well, were just not monitoring the stuff they should have. |

They have the standard blowout preventer that all wells have - however there's an additional remote shutoff that's required in the rest of the world, but not in the US (.an extra $500,000 per well was a lot of money - easier and cheaper to spend that on Lobbyists and politicians - much better return on investment - until something breaks) |

I'm not big on conspiracies but I do find it a little odd that just before the summer/peak travel season something happens to effect gas prices every year. oh and the fact that nobody put a kill switch on the oil pump. P.S. is any of this floating sludge still refinable? seems to me someone could make a killing if it is.

This one oil well isn't affecting prices at all. In fact, gas prices have dropped since it happened. I was just saying, that when an oil giant the size of BP has it's stock drop by 33%, you had better throw all you can beg, borrow, or steal it's way because that is easy money. |

It's a terrible accident that occurred mainly due to 2 circumstances: Drilling that far off the continental shelf, in water over 5000 feet deep, had not been done before; and there were a series of safety failures that, if each had happened individually would have been manageable, but in concurrence overwhelmed the failsafes. As far as the amount of oil released, the US Geological Survey (USGS) estimates the release to be between 12,000 and 19,000 barrels a day. That all adds up to anywhere between 19 million and 30 million gallons of oil. Either is worse than the Valdez, but not even in the top dozen of oil spills, in terms of volume. Clean-up for the Valdez was far more difficult than this will be, because of that spill's nearness to land, the terrain, and the remote location was an immense challenge. Most of this oil will be "cleaned" while still floating in the Gulf of Mexico. The issue with this spill won't be cleanup as much as the long-term effect on Louisiana's wetlands and barrier islands, which house all forms of wildlife and serve as protection from the storm surge of a hurricane. This is all major news right now - what won't be major news is how, in 10 years, the shrimp catches still haven't caught up to pre-spill numbers, Louisiana losing umpteen square miles of coast due to advanced erosion, and Louisiana's economy in the dumps because of the massive loss of tourist sportsmen. The possibilities of how bad this is are major news. How bad this will really be for people who live here won't even be mentioned in 5 to 10 years. By that time, the vultures will all be feeding on some other major superhuge big thing. myfirstjeep02 wrote: P.S. is any of this floating sludge still refinable? seems to me someone could make a killing if it is. ![]() Unfortunately, no - not in any way that is profitable. I work in the petrochem industry, and I can tell you that what you would have to do with the floating sludge in order to refine it even to the quality of bunker oil would be financially prohibitive. |

They get a big fat check from BP. Consumers will pay as shrimp prices increase...or it will mean we buy more of those nice little tiger shrimp from China. |

well it sucks that it cant be refined and it sucks that costal seafood and animals are harmed because they taste delicious. Corporations make mistakes, its just business I am by no means saying that its not bp's fault or that its not a big deal. its going to do damage for a very long time. however I'd be very surprised if their latest attempt to fill the line with concrete will work. path of least resistance the oil has to go somewhere it wont just stop. |

The fisherman have lost something, their livelihood.Big fat check wont bring back your "Way of life". Only fisherman with boats registered in the coastal parishes will be getting paid. Everyone else are screwed.Including all the deckhands, seafood factory workers, people who own fishing camps, whose property values will plummit, recreational fisherman who wont be able to take their kids fishing,ect.Nothing. And yes, since Louisiana provides 40% of the seafood for the entire United States, consumers WILL pay. |
