Mind quiz for today: Why do they call a criminal's picture, a mug shot or tell people to look at "his ugly mug" when a mug is a liquid-holding container for drinking beverages? I do have an idea on this but I'll let you ponder this a bit. |

Because mug is another word for face. Face shot=mug shot |

Criminal slang back in the day called the face a "mug." If one were to make faces, they were "mugging." That stuck when criminals were having photos taken of their faces.....it was a "mug" shot |

Ah! But how did they come up with using the slang term mug to mean face? They could have said "kettle shot" or "tankard shot" or totally different like " plate shot." |

I saw this on the history channel! Because in the 18th century they would have coffee mugs that looked like gross faces, so it was a mug on a mug |
