Not saying it is right, but its not the only place it happens. I used to work with guys who did their best work "after a liquid" lunch break.
In countries where alcohol is not readily available, they use narcotics or other intoxicants. I make no implication that the US or the Chrysler plant making the GCs is the only place. In Iraq & Afghanistan, many of the insurgents are so stoned that our troops have to shoot them to the point that they bleed and pass out before they die.
Working around dangerous equipment when intoxicated should not be tolerated. Like I said before the UAW should kick them out of their union before the management even has the chance to even think about taking any action. With as many workers in Michigan (including UAW members) with families who are out of work, they should have the jobs instead of these jerks getting drunk and high. Some Unions take the proactive action of getting rid of the problem workers because they have figured there is no work and no union dues paid when the company goes out of business. With the UAW holding a chunk of the US Auto Industry, this is painfully obvious to me.
