Job doing what? My son is a huge history buff and wonders if he should pursue it in college and how he can make a buck from it?

Doing thesis, comprehensives, writing, grad work is highly hard and involved business. Great revelations for getting published work!

Wasn't it that 300 Rebels from the Deathstar Inn formed up to use their Ludicrous speed horses to turn away the Redcoats. The rebel leader yelled "This is America!" as the Redcoats turned tail.

By the way....congrats! I love history (mostly WWII stuff).

No, I think George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Teddy Roosevelt led their troops into battle driving 2011 Dodge Challengers from the future to take all our jobs. When the British heard large-displacement internal combustion engines at work, they began to run away, shouting "Nee!" and clapping coconuts together. Then we dropped the atomic bomb on Adolf Hitler and became the most awesomest country in the world. Or something like that.

Congratulations stouts. My undergrad was in history (I ended up in Human Resources - go figure) so I know a little of what you have had to go through to get to this point. Go you.

Woohoo, I'm published!!! For those of you who didn't know already, I'm a doctoral student in history at Arizona State. Today, I received print copies of my very first publication, which is in the autumn issue of the Journal of Arizona History. The cat's out of the bag, I'm a nerd. But this is a huge step towards actually getting a job!

Well, I don't want to go the "normal" route - teaching in public schools or being a college professor. My program here is actually a "public history" program, which can be loosely defined as the practice of history in the public sphere (museums, archives, historic sites, working for government, etc.). I basically sat down in undergrad and realized that most Americans don't even know the basics of our history, let alone the activities of Chicana women in 1960s LA (no joke, I know professors who are that specialized ). At the moment, I'm balancing my coursework with a couple of research contracts for the National Park Service here in AZ. I've done everything from land use and water rights research, to helping compose new interpretive signage for the trails, to my BIG project, which is writing a book about Flagstaff's national monuments. But, I'm really hoping to end up in DC after I graduate. I was fortunate enough to get an internship at the Smithsonian a year ago, so I'm hoping to turn that into a post-graduation contract... I've got lots of friends and family there, unlike here, so it would be a welcome change. fingers crossed If your son really enjoys history, there are plenty of good opportunities outside of teaching. Once he gets into college, he should volunteer/intern at whatever he is interested in as much as possible. Combine that with good grades/scores and he can get into almost anywhere. What area of history does he really like? He'll make a buck, but I wouldn't guarantee he'll make two bucks.

Honestly, having to work on my CRD (and going hiking) are about the only two things that keep me sane!

Congrats on your publication. Having sound well documented information is vital for making intelligent Government and Private Sector decisions. I would love to see a History Channel series on Scientific Theory that was later on found to be Junk Science. Somehow I think we are getting a big pile shoved on us now that will fall into that category. Just a thought. Good Luck
