Post subject:  Could use some recommendations on a Tripod Work/Shop Light
Howdy folks,

I received a Craftsman Halogen Work light as a Christmas gift and it has since broken (already).

This is the one here:

I should add that the plastic piece that secures the three legs all the way down on the bottom was the piece that broke.

So, I went to Sears today to exchange it for a new one...no reason to get a refund, I still want the light...just I want one that's not broken. After a fiasco with trying to find someone to help me (apparently a little bit of snow in NJ scared everyone away who works at Sears) I finally exchanged my light...and also picked up a torque wrench :)

Much to my dismay, I came home to assemble it and the freakin' thing is already broken in the same exact spot...before I even put it together. On top of that the bracket that holds the lights to the tripod is bent as well. Clearly there is a flaw in the design for the tripod and I plan on going back and returning it this time.

That being said, (sorry for being long winded) I am currently shopping around for a new work light now...but I want something completely different than the Craftsman. When I searched around online it looks like a lot of the companies that make these lights use similar, if not identical tripods. Yes...I know I'm being anal about a silly light, but I expect the stuff to last at least a few years :)

If you guys have had a good experience with any lights in the past please link them :)

northern tool (northerntool.com) carries those tripods in store, I'm not sure if there is a NT in your area. I think the tripod is about 12 dollars. I bought two of the tripods about 2 years ago to attach my friend's worklights to. Instead of having plastic couplers, the couplers are about the same material as gas pipe couplers with metal thumb screw tighteners

Worth a shot if you'd want to just get a replacement tripod, the tripod worklights are usually somewhat universal or require very little modifications since those type halogen worklights all pretty much have the same style tubing rails for bases

I plan on going back to Sears tonight and exchanging that garbage craftsman one. Unfortunately I do not have a Northern Tool facility near me, but I did find a light on their website with the Tripod base that you were talking about. It looks like a much better design that the Craftsman and I plan on ordering it later tonight.
