Anyone into fish?

Just wondering if anyone else is a fish keeper? I have nearly 1,000 gallons running in my house, I keep African cichlids. I have frontosa, calvus, compressiceps, a 180 gallon shell dweller tank with 9 species in it, bumble bees, demasoni, and more. I also build 3D back grounds and art pieces. I just finished this one, its in a 125 gallon tank. I haven't glued it in yet, but will be as soon as I get a piece of glass for the divider that was broken out. It has a total of around 75 colors not including all the mixing going on while painting multiple colors at once. It's kind of dark, and I wanted it that way. It looks even better wet, I sprayed it down with water just to see. :goink:

That is super cool, i would love to do something like that ...if i had a big tank. I had a 125 gal, but sold due to needing room. I now have a 44 hex with a few community fish, nothing specila. My son does have a 55 gal that we built a plexiglass riser/sun area for all around so his two turtles could have a little more water area. I love Oscars, but once they get too big, I can't afford to feed them.
What materials do you use to make something like that....i.e fish compatible??

The back ground is made of styrofoam, and is painted with drylok. I don't do salt water, only fresh. Here are a couple pix. Oh, and by the way, don't eat fish!

180 gallon shell dweller tank

112 gallon

160 gallon (a long time ago)

This is my bumble bee, he's 9" long and wild caught.

pretty cool. I've always loved relaxing while watching fish in a tank but it is another $$$ hobby I don't need to get involved in.

Best fishing tackle I have ever used is My Credit Card.
I don't have to catch it, clean it or cook it.
When I travel for work, my employer pays for it.
If I show the credit card to the Waitress and tell her it is the best fishing lour I have ever had.
Smart ones laugh and dumb ones try to figure out how to tie on the line with out a hole in the card. :ROTFL:

Grouper, Salmon, and Cat Fish are my favorites.

Scrod is the most taste less fish I have ever had.

A buddy of mine from high school used to have a snakehead. That thing was viscious. If you put your hand next to the tank it would smack it's head against the glass trying to eat your hand. :shock:

I used to have a tank with and Elephant fish and some other small fishies. One of them got diseased and took out the whole tank. Now we have a dog and 3 cats so I think a fish tank wouldn't be a wise idea. Kitties might go swimming. :lol:

So, Rock, back on topic, what type of stryofoam and how did you get the curves, etc to look so natural. What kind of pigment/color did you use in the dryloc to get the colors? Got any websites or anything that tells how to do that?

Cat's aren't supposed to swim, and even if they tried in my tank THEY would be the food! :ROTFL:

I got the back pieces and the over flow box glued in the tank today. It looks kind of funny right now, but thought I would share the pic.

Im gonna start gluing in the rest of in tomorrow.

I used insulation foam for the back panels, and just random pieces out of computer boxes, printer boxes, TV boxes, what ever for the rest. I glue them together with gorilla glue, and carve it. I used anything from a hack saw blade to a spoon to cut the holes and shapes. After it was rough carved I burned it with a torch to give it more texture, and to in a way "seal" the foam. When you burn it it gets kind of a hard shell. Looks like this before it's painted.

I used concrete colors, and acrylic paints to make the color. The base coat was the light gray in the pic above, and I just kept adding color. There's more then 75 colors on it not including the mixing going on as I painted multiple colors at once.

i got my 120... growing out an aro for a friend... got a jack a midas a GT and FH, also got a gold nugget pleco and a blue phantom pleco. in a 30 gallon i got breeding cons that i use the fry as feeders

used to have fish but that was over 10 years ago. I moved once and they didnt take well to that and all died. I never got more. I had a cat then and still do have two cats. the cats liked the fish. they never tried to go fishing... they just watched them and sometimes pawed the glass.

Yeah I know Cats are not that manly but they can be nice pets. they are less work and easier to take care of for some of us that work odd or long shifts. Plus they are less worry if you want to go away. I would like to get a Boxer but I'm going to wait a few years. My one cat is 15 so he may only be around a few more years. maybe then I'll get a puppy.

wow, about 3 days after i posted this my heater in my tank died. i checked the tank at 7 am, then went to school at 9 for 12 hours, didnt get home til about 1130... and when i did i found the tank at 52 degrees... lost my plecos( gibb, blue phantom, and gold nugget), my 1 foot silver aro and my 10" midas.... my spare heater i just gave to a friend and planned to replace over the weekend, so all i had was the little 80 watt in my 30, did a water change and added warm water, moved the fish form the 30 into the 120, put in the heater... got 3 space heater and hooked em all up facing the tank about a foot away and hoped the rest of my stock made it.... well all was well and the tank raised in temp the next morning i waited outside petsmart ( the nearest fish store) for it to open since they open the earliest of any place around and bought 2 new 250watt heaters, and a 100 watt spare.... really sucks i lost all those fish, in time i'll replace the stock

possibly thinking about switching it up and doing a extremely planted tank ( instead of slightly planted like i have now) and doing blue, golden, and bolivian rams with misc other smaller fish, maybe some shrimp etc

I have a 350g Saltwater tank and sump sitting in the garage waiting to be set up at the new house.

Also just setup a 6g Nano Reef at the office.

Had an 80 gallon reef tank about a 2 years ago had multiply anemones, Zoanthids, and Gorgonians. And then had 3 tomato clowns, 2 Volitan lion, and my favorite a Honey Comb Puffer. It was almost perfect all the fish got along great had no coral issues or anything until i left for a week with my buddy to feed them. I came home to them doing work on the power lines in my neighborhood needless to say nothing survived.

Anyone into fish?
