Gulf Coast Snow??????????????

So apparently we're in for some snow starting this evening with sleet and ice then snow tonight and into tomorrow down here in the Bayou city, this is a RARE occurrence down here. I drive nearly 100 miles a day to and from work. Does anyone have any pointers on how to stay safe? I have lived in the south my entire life, this stuff is foreign to us hahaha. Thanks for any and all input.

Just slow down a little, go easy on the brakes,give yourself lot's of room to stop and watch out for everyone else.(as they slide past you) Four wheel drive will help. My son and I just missed being rear ended at a stop light the other day on the ice in his 4x4 truck. We saw them coming new they could not stop, my son (in 4x4 ) was able to pull up and to the right just enough for the car behind us to miss us and slam the guy in the left turn lane. Missed us by inches.

1.) Slow down! Just because you have 4 wheel drive doesn't mean you can fly around on the highway at the same speeds you normaly would. If you think you need to put it in 4x4 to go 50+ on the highway, you shouldn't be going 50+ on the highway. Unfortunately most people don't realize this. They feel 4x4 is a get out of jail free card. It isn't. Which leads me to my next piece of advice.

2.) Leave plenty of space between you and other cars. Even if you are a great driver most everyone else is NOT! If you think you are far enough behind the guy in front of you, give yourself more space. And be wary of your right and left lanes and where the cars next to you are (because sure enough they will try to merge real quick and think you can stop on a dime).

3.) If you think you are braking early enough to come to a complete stop, brake earlier.

Use your head and you'll be fine. Be safe and good luck.

It the Armageddon! Run for your lives! Snoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwww!!!! Or at least you would think so from the news reports. No real pointers here, just drive safe man. Take your time and if you don't feel like you can get there safely stay home. Better to miss a day than wreck your ride or get hurt. stay home if at all possible.

I do okay on snow (the Air Force trained me in Korea/Germany - something about carrying bombs)

but even if you're okay - the other fools are ridiculous - Austin gets snow once every 6-7 years and people will be stuck trying to cross a 6 inch rise in the road..... (and lose control coming down the other side)

Take it easy, practice in a vacant parking lot if you can, that is how I trained my son to drive on ice.
The original Goodyears are crap, my Coopers hold the ice and snow great.
Use full time 4X4 not part time so if you hit a dry spot, you won't wind up and risk any drive line damage.

Don't feel bad, people in Northern cities like Chicago & Detroit forget how to drive on snow and ice every year. Some of the biggest idiots drivers drive Cross Over type vehicles, just my observation from how many go into the ditch when it snows. :-)r

Decided to say screw it, its friday after all. I stayed home. My safety and libby are more important to me. We already had a fatality due to someone hitting a guard rail on an over pass and falling off.

It has been Crazy here in DFW area all week. We got about an inch thick coating of ice on everything Monday night. Stupid DOT here only uses sand on the roads, no salt. And the high all week has been mid 20's. So we still have a nice thick layer of ice on the roads everywhere. Then last night it started snowing around 10:00. They forecast 1-2" of snow, and were spazzing out over that. Woke up this morning to 6". So now we have snow on top of ice. And to top it off, crazy, stupid, Texas drivers with a huge crowd of Super Bowl folks from the north just laughing at us.

Oh, and this was a shot from Sunday, right before this junk hit. Then we have had the lowest temps in 22 years since then.

My Jeep is getting lonely. I have been out around the neighborhood each day, but have been working from home all week. I think I have enough common sense to keep on the road and out of trouble. There are thousands of goof-balls that I don't trust out there.

Yeah on Tuesday it was literally 70 degrees at 5:45am when I left the house and it was 45 degrees at 6:50am when I got to work hahahaa
