Hi guys i will be heading over to your neck of the woods in late July with my wife for a three week holiday visiting LA, Anaheim and Las Vegas. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas of what we must see and do while in the area??? We are already planning to hire a car in Anaheim and drive to Vegas, go on a tour to the Grand Canyon and hover dam, some shopping and a little gambling. Cheers, Michael

You should rent a Jeep and go wheeling while you are here. 
I try not to do normal touristy stuff so I am no help w/ that. |

Be ready for the heat. Las Vegas in July will be 100+ F. If you can, fly to Vegas and rent a car there (save yourself a multi-hour drive through the desert). The trip to the Grand Canyon will be a long one, but well worth it. If you want to see a show in Vegas, I would recommend "KA". It's pretty cool. Of course you have to go to Disney, while in Anaheim. P.S. While in Vegas, you will be a short 7 hour drive from Moab

When I went - the must see's were Redwoods - the National park is Northern California, Golden Gate bridge, Lake Tahoe and Yosemite I preferred to stay away from the cities as much as possible - unless you really like traffic jams. |

I'd second Ed's advice about flying to Vegas. If you do decide to drive it, go early in the week, definitely not on a Friday, and early in the day. The traffic heading to Vegas can be unbelievably heavy and if it's moving you'll have lots of idiots driving at 90 to 100 mph or more with no regard for anyone's safety including their own. It didn't use to be so bad, but now it's like playing Russian Roulette. And you'd be driving some of Southern California's most congested freeways just to get to the desert. Even getting from Anaheim to Corona can take an hour or more depending on time of day. Zion National Park in Utah is a lovely place that's a do-able day trip from Vegas. The drive up Mt. Charleston in Vegas is pretty sweet too. Lake Mead has good scenery and Red Rock state park too. A drive to San Diego from Anaheim might be worth it. They have the zoo, of course, Sea World, the Gaslamp District and other stuff. The desert has Death Valley, Joshua Tree National Park and the Mojave National Preserve. But that's all awfully hot that time of year. Whatever you do, have fun! |

Head up I-5 til you get to CA 99. Take 99 into the good ol central valley and check out all the national parks just east of us. Mainly recommend hittin Yosemite (just came back a few days ago from a little half day trip there and it was raging with water this time of year, beautiful). Lake Tahoe is always amazing, so is the coastal California areas like Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, etc. In fact, if your willing, take the Pacific Coast Highway all the way to Oregon if you could (CA HWY 1), most amazing scenery of any ocean in the world the whole way up!! O and by the way, its gonna be just as hot here in California as it is in Vegas.  (or maybe the real heat in California is left with us good folks here in the central valley  ) O and also by the way, the desert is beautiful, it aint boring as others may have you believe
