OK guys, if this looks OK by everyone we will use this for trail rating. It is very simple and not 100 different ratings. It is only 5 ratings and will fit almost everythrail we would ever do. read it over and if you DO NOT like it then please let me know. Hope this helps. Later...Clint

1 Rock: All weather road; 4WD not needed.
1 ½ Rocks Graded road; 4WD may be needed in poor weather.
2 Rocks Unimproved or rarely graded road. 4WD or extra clearance needed at times, with no special driving skills required.
2 ½ Rocks Road rarely maintained, 4WD, good clearance, low range often needed, with some extra care and a bit of driving experience useful.
3 Rocks Road in difficult terrain, rarely maintained, 4WD, good clearance, and range essential, with some driving skill and daring required.
3 ½ Rocks Road in difficult terrain, probably maintained only by occasional users. Excellent stock truck or utility vehicle required, with considerable driving skill and daring needed.
4 Rocks Trail either never bladed or badly eroded. Stock vehicles are in jeopardy. Modifications for improved off-road performance and top driving skills needed.
4 ½ Rocks Jeepers not much concerned with vehicle durability or personal safety." It is common for vehicles experience major mechanical failures (gears, axles, driveshafts) on these trails.
5 Rocks Are you kidding…Cal Wally would not even want to do this trail.

Ok, so if you are trying to decipher on how to rate a trail and you are stuck between a 3 1/2 rock trail and an 4 rock trail do just split the difference and call it a 3 3/4 rock trail? :lol:

The only problem I have with any trail rating system is that they generally don't give any indication of how difficult the trail is if you take the trail leader's preferred route vs. the easiest bypasses.

Flat Iron Mesa (Moab) is a great example. It has bypasses everywhere, so, even though the trail is rated a 4+ if you take the popular obstacles, a stock Liberty can make it through (with a skilled driver) by taking bypasses.

So, in this example, I'd rate Flat Iron Mesa 4 Rocks/2.5 Rocks.
