Post subject:  Adopt-A-Trail
Hi Losties: We have been thinking about adopting a trail in the San Bernardino National Forest for a while. I checked out one that didn't prove out, but we now have another possibility: 2N33, the Pilot Rock Trail. It goes from Lake Silverwood to Rock Camp at SH 173, fairly long.

It would be great if a number of us could check this out to see if it's what we want. Also, and even more importantly, will we make a commitment to maintain a trail by running it at least a few times a year and performing needed maintenance?

Adopting a trail is something that many clubs do, right now about 30 or so, and is a way of giving back to the community. This particular way is doubly good because we're helping keep trails usable and clean, while discouraging illegal use and trail breaking. If we do put this together, we'll need a club liaison person; it can't be me because I'm the AAT Coordinator for the area. I think Jeff Phillips would be good, don't you?

So, please let me hear from you on both counts on this thread. I'm not running this as a poll because we need to know who will commit. And if you do think we should do this and commit to it, please make sure you can give the time for it.

Do you have a pic of the trail on a map you can post? I will dig out my maps and look for it tomorrow. I am interested for sure. Is there any particular schedule they need the trail maintained or just whenever we can do it?

So when can we go run it?

I like the idea of the Adopt a Trail and wouldn't mind giving it a go if you guys want.

OK, I'll scan a pic of the map showing the trail, hope it comes out alright. Will post later.

No, there isn't a set schedule, it's more determined by the needs of the trail and our own availablity, but if there are things to do we will need to get on them. Annually we need to prepare a trail plan showing what we need to do, and prepare a brief report after a run so our hours can be recorded for credit. Typically, unless there's a lot to do, a patrol might last only a few hours, leaving the rest of the day for other trails. Initially there may be more to do.

As far as when, that's up to the group and many thanks to those who've responded positively already. While I'd really like to be a part of the survey group, my calendar is so full I wouldn't have time until the first weekend of July and my presence isn't necessary. That timing is later than desirable but still good because it's before our Big Bear event. Then, if anyone would be interested, we could make that a run for the event (if we decide to adopt it) and include 2N17X, which is a challenging black diamond trail that runs into 2N33. Just a thought - something different.

I'm liking the sound of this. How close is the trail to others up there that need to be pre-run for our event in July? I say we set up a run up there to check it out soon and perhaps pre-run one of the other trails also.

now that I have said that, let me check my calendar. :shock:

Post subject:  Proximity to other BB runs
I'm having a problem getting the scanned map to upload. Anyway, the end of 2N33 by Rock Camp is not too far from the Holcomb Creek Trail, 3N93, where it ends at 3N16. You could take 3N34 from Rock Camp. From the other end by Holcomb Creek, John Bull is also not far, but I'm not sure you can squeeze that in too. But if you were able to, you'd come out near Gold Mountain and from there it's close to Jacoby Canyon. All except Gold Mountain would be done in the opposite direction from usual, but what the hey.

A reminder: Adventure Passes are required in these areas any time a vehicle stops. The rangers do often cite for this. There are many who don't get them, but if you get caught ....

Do you have a good trail map? If not, I can get you one.

Sorry, I couldn't hold back any longer after seeing the picture.

Many don't realize that Jeff is a freelance physician and the tool is his creative idea of a forceps. Needless to say, his practice is limited.

Why he brought this novel but highly personal instrument to the trail is a question perhaps better left unanswered.

Do Adopt-A-Trail volunteers have to have wilderness passes? I will be looking at my maps tonight for sure to check it out. Perhaps we should just plan for Sunday and see how it shakes out? I need to get on a trail as I am having Moab withdraw bad.

If I remember right.... Pilot Rock is on the back side (North - East side) of Silverwood Lake. We were heading that way before my little flop ended the day. I have a map at home I will post. I've heard this is a rather challenging trail. I think we should check it out, before committing to this trail. It would be a shame to adopt a trail that only a few can run.

Burchie: 2N33 is NOT a challenging trail and is one that stock vehicles can make. There are several illegal bypasses that are more challenging, but these aren't part of the trail. Perhaps you're thinking of 2N17X, which splits off from 2N33 and is definitely challenging. I don't remember any off-camber sections on 2N33 either; don't think there are.

JJ: Adventure Passes aren't required when actually working on the adopted trail, but only there. We would have magnetic placards to use instead. In all other cases, they're required and I've seen rangers issue many citations for lack thereof. The probabilities of encountering a ranger are slim, but you'll have to answer for yourself if it's worth the gamble. I think they're $5 for the day or $30 for 12 months.

I didn't want to chime in earlier because I can't commit to the trail. We're not sure how long we're going to be in CA. But, for as long as we are here, you can count us in for the cleanup efforts.

Ok, I am sitting here, map in hand wishing I could leave right now!
This is in an area where I have not yet been and always wondered about so I am looking forward to getting up there to check it out. Where is there a good meeting spot to start the trail from?

Post subject:  Meeting Place for Adopt-A-Trail run. Time?
Suggestion: The fast food place at the junction of I 15 and CA 138. I don't remember if it's a MacDonalds or what. It's where we met for the Toys for Tots run. This should be convenient for most.

From there, go east on CA 138 (right turn at stop sign) and continue until you see the sign for Hesperia. Turn left and go several miles until you see a sign for Cedar Springs Dam, which is one end of Lake Silverwood. Turn right, climb hill. Just before you get to the parking area, there's a dirt road on the left. This is the start of 2N33.

The trail meanders around the lake for a while, then eventually climbs. Near the bottom, you'll see the start of 2N17X. Don't go there; another time. There are a few more intersections on the way up, but I think all are marked. If in doubt, take the most heavily traveled one. The trail will lead you past Pilot Rock and eventually to the Rock Camp campground at CA 173, which is paved at this section. From there, turn left to get to 3N34 if you're heading to Holcomb Creek. If you decide to go in the other direction to Lake Arrowhead, there's still a detour you have to take but it's not marked. You'd turn right at the closure and continue to North Bay. Turn left til you get back to 173, then right. From there 173 goes to the intersection just above the main section of Lake Arrowhead. Maybe this is more than you need to know.

I'm writing this because this Sunday is booked for me unless I can get a special dispensation from a higher authority. Please post your meeting time in case.

Do you remember our ill fated trip whem we all tore stuff up? This is the series of trails that we were supposed to do. Cleghorn again? You told me that we would be back to do it again. I will help, just say when.
