. The Hanover House is a nice place...good food- real chefs in the kitchen. How long are you in the area for? There are some really nice places that you should go to/do/see. My top picks for someone from the midwest:
1: Ride over the Kancamangus Highway (you can stay in NH if you can pronounce it correctly
) it's a bit of a drive from Hanover, but you'll be in my favorite part of the state when you get there. The Kanc is a 32 mile road that goes over Kancamangus Pass from Lincoln to Conway (lotsa outlet shopping for you and your wife to do there) it's a BEAUTIFUL ride, especially in the spring.
2: Drive across Rt. 302- 302 goes from conway to the great lakes, but I'm only talking about the section from Conway to Rt. 3. 302 will bring you across through the mountains, in front of Mt. Washington and the Mt. Washington Hotel (one of the last of the original Grand Hotels in the world, there's ALOT of history there) and if you have the money, have dinner there- Jacket and tie, reservations required- but the food is amazing. From there, head down Rt. 3, which runs right into I93, and from there you can go where ever you want.
This is the Mt. Washington Hotel- not the most flattering picture, it was kinda a bad time to take pictures there...no green grass, no leaves, no snow....but you get the idea- it's fecking gorgeous.
3: If you fancy yourself an outdoorsman, stop at McKenzie's in Lincoln, they're always having massive sales on outdoor stuff- kinda like Steep and Cheap.com. The money-grubbing big business in Lincoln tried driving them out, but they just moved instead
, and continue to kick Lahoot's collective booty.
4: While driving over the Kanc, stop at the viewing areas. Take lots of pictures. There's nothing like that in Toledo.
5: While driving over the Kanc, stop at the "day use recreation area" called "Lower Falls"- it's a set of small waterfalls on the river which also include a somewhat large swimming area, lots of natural slides, etc. It's a great time for everyone, especially if you have kids. 6: Bear Notch Road is interesting as well. It goes from the conway side of the Kanc down into Bartlett (god willing, my future home
) and it's another nice ride, but not a Must-Do at all, just a nice thing to do that even us locals like to do.
7: Sample the local Cusine: I already mentioned the Mt. Washington, but that's on the pricey and fancy-dress side. Next step down from the Mt. Washington is the Christmas Farm Inn in Jackson. It's just north of conway on Rt. 16, they have great food- it's a bit like the Hanover House, but a little bit nicer- and it's Christmas all the time, what could be better? Below the Xmas farm on the niceness scale, you have literally HUNDREDS of options. In Conway, there's the Muddy Moose - a slightly tourist-oriented (like everything else in conway) family restaraunt. Good food, good prices, a nice local hangout as well. In Lincoln, there's Fratello's Italian Restaraunt- GREAT food, decent prices, awesome view from the one in Lincoln too. If you decide to stay overnight in Lincoln, head to Mr. W's House of Pancakes for breakfast- good food, awesome prices. The other option is the other pancake house right up the street from there, but they were a bit expensive (college student speaking) and too touristy for us to enjoy. You could also head to...well...just about anyplace in the Conway-Lincoln-Bartlett-Jackson area...it's tourist country, and anyplace that isn't good goes out of business really quick. The Bartlett Inn is a nice place to spend a night, they offer breakfast in the morning, then you're on your own. It's a small little mom and pop (literally) Inn in Bartlett, they have great rates, great rooms, and a great breakfast. The owners will tell you anything you want to know about the area too- from what's good and happening to where the local real-estate offices are (because you are going to want to stay) and they're just all around friendly and interesting people.
Oh, and since you're from Ohio, GO TO THE OCEAN! NH has a whopping 19 miles of coastline to choose from (ok, about 10 miles when you remove the unusable rocky coastline) so I think you should head to Mass for that (I'll never reccomend going to mass for anything else-ever.) and enjoy it.
I really hope you enjoy your visit to NH! You'll find that people aren't nearly as rude as you've heard they are...just don't be an booty, and you'll find that people are more than friendly. Anybody who you meet who is a rude booty is likley a tourist...we get alot of a$$hole tourists from our neighbor to the south
(no offense pete or other Mass residents who don't fit the steriotype) who give us a bad name, because the look and talk like locals, but they aren't. Seriously, enjoy your time in NH...I wish I was back there so bad...2 more weeks, then I think I may never leave NH and VT again...
