Hello, the other day, I saw a JK with a warn winch attached to his rear hitch. I was wondering if there was a purpose. I thought about getting a winch myself, but sadly enough, I'd have to change out the bumper altogether. But I never saw a rear winch, have you guys?

If I remember right the weight limit is less for a trailer hitch winch. There would be a really long run using expensive cable to get the power from the battery also. Get a front hitch and save on the cable.

A lot of hard core mud trucks mount a front and rear winch for self recovery in either direction. That would be overkill on most Libertys though.

Perhaps the JK you saw only had a rear receiver hitch and that is why he mounted it in the back? Maybe for weight distribution?

With a class II hitch you should be able to handle quite a heavy load, and a class III you lift a KJ off the ground.

If you have a front and rear receiver hitch and a winch mounted on a removeable receiver mount then you can self rescue in either direction w/ only 1 winch, which can be a big advantage.

YOU WILL have to run wires to the rear for a hook up also

you may lose a little pulling capacity by using a hitch, it'll put strain on the hitch pin

Actually, I though that it was strange seeing it in the rear, but as for me I looked into getting one on the front, but I'd need an ARB bumper. But as far as the cable goes, I do have a tow pkg on my KJ, so that little outlet plug is right next to the hitch. It was just a thought.

you will need a larger wire. the trailer wires are too small. the cables you will need are the size of heavy duty jumper cables. The winch may need up to 400+amps at full load.
