LOST NYC and Long Island

I got my beach permit too and am planning on doing a run on robert moses this weekend to see how the CRD holds on the sand. May also try gilgo when the weather gets warmer.

What beaches are you planning on going?

Finally took the liberty out to Gilgo beach this weekend and honestly i was little worried about getting stuck but she handed it like a champ. Next time ill leave the extra shovel for the girlfriend at home.

Before i decided to take her into the beach sand i searched the forums about airing down and decided to air down to 18psi and of course i always kept some good momentum on deep ruts. For future reference for anyone from LI who decides to head out to Gilgo beach, on the trail leading to the beach i was able to hear my skids doing some sand plowing and i also heard a sand rock here and there so if you dont have any skids, be careful. I also gave an Xj a good tug because his "wife" got him stuck. Funny thing was that i didnt see anyone else around but him... lol Oh and make sure to bring your own air compressor because Gilgo doesnt have an air station like Democrat point.

If you have google earth just type in cedar beach-sore thumb and follow the ocean parkway going East until you see an entrance.

Ah dam its a shame, the permits are only sold from January to the end of April and they only hand out a limited number. I was able to get one when they were available at the robert moses state park office. We'll keep in touch around the forum and when I get mine next year if all goes well I'll send you a PM and we'll go there together if you want.

I know I can get one for smith point year round. I also know or a area by Smith point to wheel as well.

Hey, I just found this thread, probably should have looked for it a while ago, Im in Queens, work in Hicksville. I've always been meaning to find some good places locally to take the truck off road.. I have an '07 six speed and I know they don't do too well in sand because of the intake on the transmission (I know there's a way around it, but I forget).. there's a thread on here somewhere about it.. I haven't done much to my Jeep as to a lift/bigger tires because it is my daily driver, I put about 45-60 miles a day, and have almost 50k in just over two years.

Anyway, if anyone does get out and have fun locally or even a bit upstate, I'm definitely down to beat up my truck, or attempt to, lol.

..and the reason I actually came across this thread was because there's someone in NY that I originally saw on here and I saw his truck in Manhattan.. it was black, I think an '05 maybe, he had mounted his lights right infront of the windshield on the side of the hood, similar to the TJ's, and I want to do the same.

My wife is from south ozone park. We now live up state. We get a trip together pretty often. We go about an hour north of NYC. loads of fun, loads of mud and loads of work getting un-stuck!! :twisted:

I'm in Fresh Meadows.. I definitely want to take my truck out, but as of now it's stock, so I don't know how well I'd keep up if I actually took it out. I was looking at your thread about "909" .. I wish two things, one, I lived closer, and two, my truck was lifted because then I would definitely make that trip, Poughkeepsie is probably a little less than 1.5 hours from me.

Labor day Weekend at gilgo. The CRD behaved it self very well even though with the heaviness of the Crd and the almost bold stock tires. Can't wait till next summer! 2010 4x4 permit here I come!

Hey CRD-Guy, I'm just curious, I'm doing my rounds and checking all the permits I need for the beaches around here and out east.. I was wondering what permit you have for Gilgo? and where else that permit is good for.

alright, this is what it says in the back of the permit for the beaches:
Captree- main field and overlook field
Jones Beach- fields 6, 10, west end #2 and west end boat basin
Gilgo, Sure thumb- permit valid 24 hours daily
Robert Moses (Democrat point)- field 2 all dates field 3 and 4 sept 14 to dec 31 only

Democrat point is mostly for fishing.
Hither Hills- year around except memorial day and labor day
Montauk Point- lower parking lot only
Sunken Meadow- Field 1 and 3 from sept 11 to dec 31

I got the permit at the robert moses park office and they only give out a certain number of them. If you want to buy one there only available from Jan to April 31. The permit is called the 4x4 fishing permit, some people use it for fishing while others use it so just for the beach and 4x4ing around the sand **cough cough**

If you do decide to get the permit you also have to get a strap, a shovel a jack board a fishing rod (i got mind from walmart 40bucks fishing rod and a small tackle box with stuff in it) and a toilet. I got a small toilet camping from dicks sporting goods.

You should also have with you an air compressor because certain beaches dont have any air stations, i heard that democrat have one but ive never been there since thats mostly for fisher men.
Oh buy the way if you do get the permit you should invest in some tire deflators, they'll save you lots of time

Awesome, thanks so much, I definitely have to get on that. I have a couple people that fish, so I'll have to 'drag' them along.
Oh and I ordered a Fumoto oil drain valve, waiting for the next time I change my oil. How do you like it?

hey Dean the valve is great, i only found out about the fumoto valve when i joined this site. There is no mess like it used to when taking off the screw and having the oil run down my arm and i dont have to worry about stripping the oil pan. That was one of my main concerns. Just be very careful if you do decide to take your KJ off roading. If you get stuck on top of something with out skids and need to back up, well... lets just say that it wont be pretty especially if you're in the middle of nowhere.

Im sure your fishing buddies will have a blast and think of it this way, the more friends you bring the more people will help you shovel when you get stuck :wink:

. Im sure you wont have a problem . I didnt get stuck and the CRD is alot heavier then the 3.7s.

BennyMigs also mentioned something about the permit for next year. If we all get the permit we can mark a date and hit the sand with our KJs.
