I'm heading up for Lobsterfest in a few short weeks and I'd like to take the KJ out and do some light playing. I've heard through the Jeep rumor mill of some driveable trails through the Maine woods that some of the logging companie's still use. Any truth to this? |

I'm sure there are a ton, more so the further north you get. If you get a DeLorme map book you can probably see a lot of logging roads and fire roads marked on the maps. Be careful if you're planning on wheeling alone, though. If you can, try to have some communication with somebody back home (CB or HAM, cell phones are not reliable up there). If you can't have that, at least have somebody who knows where you are going and when you are expected back so they can send out a search party if you get stuck. Make sure to being all the necessary recovery equipment. |

I did a short run a couple of years ago in Greeneville, near Moosehead. The trail was a little over 6 miles on some rough logging roads. Not lifted, not going. The trails decent and the view spectacular. Elephant mountain and others. I found getting in that there were a few signs pointing the way. I went from Lilly Bay Road. Doesn't take to long to drive. I went in April when that area was still snow covered and flooding. The road was rough and had some hidden deep ruts. So look carefully. As long as your lifted you'll make it. I would a least have a shovel, just in case. It ended at a B52 bomber crash site. You have to hike about a quarter mile further into the woods. To see it. The%20B-52 There are more logging roads to the north of Lilly Bay, some requiring a fee to loggers. Mostly a let them know who's around and let you know the rules. Loggers rule, you don't. Trucks with logs big, your not type stuff. From there you can get to Mt. Katahdin and hike to the Northern start of the Appalachian Trail, spend a night or two at Pittston Farm etc. Use the above Moosehead.Net link to find you way. Jeep magazine covered this section back in V4 I3. And as others have stated check DeLormes out of Freeport, Maine for directions and maps. Their good for that. have fun and wheel safely. |
