Post subject:  Austin, TX and surrounding area, any advice for us?

Hey guys,

We used to live in CA and for the past year we've been living in NC. It may be time for us to move to TX this year and Austin is the place if I accept the relocation offer.

I've been looking at the area as well as at places near the various lakes (Lake Travis and LBJ, for example). They seem nice, but of course I don't know anything about the school systems, crime rate, etc.

Would you know any online resources where I can check up on these stats?

Most helpful would be county-operated real-estate websites that have information about ownership, deeds, parcel info, and GIS (we're thinking of building so would need to know elevation, flood plain, jurisdiction, etc.)

Howdy - Welcome to Texas

West side of town tends to be nice - closer to the lake nicer - and more expensive
Austin schools are fairly good. Westlake and Lake Travis tend to be better - but they also tend to be a lot more expensive.

I'm southwest - OakHill

I know there are web sites - don't know them off the top of my head - I'll add a post if I find them
Statesman is the newspaper

City site has crime statistics by zip code

Goodwin realtors had better links about schools

Keller Williams tends to sell more in Austin

Post subject:  Traffic

Traffic can be a holy terror in Austin. I work in Austin but I drive 80 miles one way to come up here each day. Both my wife and I love Austin and we will probably move closer.

Good luck on the move. You'll love Lake Travis if you're a boater.
