Any good places to do some 2wd offroading?

The problem with Off-road anywhere in Texas is that most of the land is private - so you need to have permission to drive.

however - the Texas Park system has lots of places to go - a few have light trails and they have the OHV program they're expanding.

(FYI - I think 90% of the 4x4's in Texas that actually go off-road are for hunting leases - ask around for friends that go hunting and see if they need a ride - the 4x4 is typically a precaution - not a requirement)

How about Padre? Lots of places you can drive on the beach in 2WD.

BTW we're going to North Padre again at the end of the month, 9/25 - 9/27 for some camping and kayaking. You're welcome to come along. Thread is in Austin Paddlers Meetup group, at:

Well that sounds fun to me. I need to check work/school schedule.
I might be able to make it.
My grandpa gave me a kayak a couple years ago, I just used it to paddle around our tank. I have also been on a 3 day kayaking trip on the Buffalo river and 1/4 mi up the White River. That was a lot of fun.

I have like the cheapest kayak imaginable, I don't know how hardcore the kayaking is going to be where yall are going but if it is easy enough for an amatuer paddler with a little plastic kayak i might bring it. Otherwise I might just be down for the camping/driving.

Sounds fun though anyway.

I probably won't bring our kayak :-) I will just be there to enjoy camping and spending some relaxing time with the kids.

The kayaking won't be all that hardcore. I took our tandem out in the sound once before and it was me and my seven year old. The way back was a little tougher since you have about a foot and a half swells to deal with, and the wind, but it's not that bad. If you have a sit-on-top you'll be wet for sure :-) and the flatter the bottom of your kayak the more you'll have to work.

But if you just want to camp, it'll be fun.

Sounds pretty cool. I think I might even put a cb in my Jeep this weekend. I have been wanting one, even if I trade it for 4x4 in the future i can just yank it out. I will pm you later if I am sure I can make it that way I can get your phone number. I will have to leave pretty early Friday in order to catch up with you guys.

Yep, we're leaving Austin on Friday so should be there Friday morning, around eleven to noon-ish. If you can make it that day, great. Otherwise, Saturday or Sunday would be fine. Remind me of your cell number again, please? Mine is four-oh-eight, five zero seven zero one nine zero.
