| Post subject: | Red River NM area trails? |
We will be in Red River for vacation next weekend and through the week. We're looking to take a couple of days and get off the paved roads and up into the mountains. Nothing too difficult as my Liberty is stock except for the Revos and 2 other couples will be renting Jeeps, we don't mind a some challenge though. One trip must involve fishing and both should be good for the little kids to run around and have fun. I've got some info on Goose Lake and Greenie Peak. Any other ideas? |

Hey OK Jeep...the national forests are beign restricted left and right here in NM--4 of 5 national are restricted. You will be in the Questa ranger district of the Carson National forest--. Check for the forest office in Questa NM about 20 miles or so west of Red River. Also, The chamber of commerce in Red River does have information on 4 wheel drive trails in the area, also. Check out Cabresto lake should be fun for everyone..don't take car to the lake might be little difficult but stock liberty or truck should do fine..if I remember right!!! Enjoy the area, Ron |

Just one tip for dealing with National Forest and such. Never even mention off-roading, they will kick you our and scorn on you. To them that mean just driving across grass fields and off the trails, with little regard for the enviroment. Say you are looking for some forest service roads or road that require 4wd. To them a forest road, even a badly rutted on in poor condition is still on-road driving. I learned this from experience when I had a trail side discussion with a local Ranger. |

Didn't get any responsed before we left, but we managed to have a lot of fun. 2 other couples rented Wranglers in town and we spent 8 hours and 60+ miles on trials around Red River. Will have to look at my map again to remember all the places we went but a few are: Cabresto Lake (very rocky and slow), Greenie Peak, Midnight Meadows, the upper valley area southwest of town..... We all had a great time! In the morning I had 3 carseats in the Liberty since it was a little chilly in the open top Wranglers. Had a 1, 2 & 3 year old with us. Got on a couple of trails where I had to fold both mirrors in and probably added a little pinstriping from mother nature. |
