Post subject:  Rear Locker Questions

I have a few questions about a rear locker... Im an idiot and decided to buy a 2wd Liberty. So i am questioning installing one, to help improve traction in the snow and muddy terrain. I am looking to start "hitting" the trails in the spring.

1. How hard is the install? I dont have things like a torque wrench, i am sure i can rent most tools needed but i just need to know if my Jeep will be off the road for a while or not.

2. Do you think they are worth it? Or should i trade it in for a 4x4 Jeep? I have the cash but i probably will take a 2k loss, in trading this in over what i owe. So i am weighing the benifits/cost.

3. The reason why i posted this in mid-atlantic forums is because i may need help installing this locker. Do you think anyone in the area may be able to help me in the up coming month or so in installing this? I will pay you, buy you beer or feed you. Along with making a "write-up" for the forums.

4. What brand do you suggest? I would like to spend between 700-800 max. But if i can get a quality locker for cheap.. let me know :)

5. Do you think a "locked" 4x2 could handle the trails? Not pro trails or very expeirenced ones, but possibly a small one here or there? I am new to Jeeps, and this is gonna be my new hobby i hope.

I know these is alot of questions, and it would be great if maybe you guys/gals could put alittle insight into this :)

Discuss.

I wouldn't call this a easy install. When I did mine done last month. I sent it to a shop let someone else with experience do it. Besides the locker you may also need new axle seals maybe bearings. I got price quotes from $350 to $800 to install my ARB. This price included the seals, carrier bearings and gear oil. It didn't include the locker, installing the air compressor or any of the wiring. I did that myself.

Hmm, thats pricey. I have read on hear it could be done. But i may take it somewhere, if i cant do it on my own, or with assistance. I want to learn it though, thats why i was trying to set something up to install it.

The PowerTrax and the ARB are way different beasts to install.

The Powertrax - goes into the existing carrier housing - Edwin said it took him 1 1/2 hours to install. - however you have to adjust to driving it - you can't disconnect it - but most folks say they like it, a couple of people have broken them.

The ARB - replaces the entire carrier and requires setup - a professional is a really good idea, it's a lot more expensive - however you turn it off and on when you want it.

So far I like it, I can see in the snow both wheels locked. I had Jeff Daniels put it in but I think I could've if I had had a garage! Joe http://www.jeffdanielsjeeps.com/#top
