Post subject:  If you have a TJ with Death Wobble...Looky
So I was out driving the Rubi tonight, and the normal death wobble started coming up again. This time, it would take my front driver wheel off 3 studs, and sheared (Completely) off the other 2. Luckily, the tire went up into the wheel well and acted as a skid for the axle, to stop it from biting into the ground. I got her to a complete stop and no other damage (Knock on wood!) aside from a gouged rim, all new studs and lugs, and a new rotor. My message to you TJ owners...Check your lugs every 500-1000 miles, period. It could mean your life. Im lucky my Rubi loves me enough to keep me around :roll: .

Thats some scary doo doo man, glad you didnt lose controll! I rotate my tires every 2 thousand miles and check the nuts about every thousand. I use to crank them on real tight but them I couldnt get them off so now I just snug them up and check often. Did it ruin the wheel?

Some nice cuts in it, but nothing a centramatic dynamic wheel balancer cant fix :twisted: .

Use a torque wrench to tighten your lug nuts properly. Overtightening the lug nuts is what cause the studs to break most of the time. Over tightening the nuts with a impact wrench can break studs as well as warp the brake rotors.

I usually torque them down to between 95-105 lbs. Never had a problem. I have had several friends of late have their wheel studs break off after having new tires mounted at places like Walmart where the just zip them on with the impact gun.

Torque wrench set to click at 95lbs - takes about a minute to check all 4 tires
don't forget on Aluminum wheels - you have to retorque after about 50 miles -
the heat/cool cycles will loosen the lugs if you don't

Thing is, I did torque em with my snap-on...90 ft-lbs to be exact. I hate aluminum rims now. :roll:
