The collar goes around the flange opening where the front propeller shaft goes into the differential case. This is (supposedly) the weakest point of the differential. From what I understand, internal pressure from shock torque causes this area to crack apart blowing up the whole differential. So, this collar is supposed to keep that from happening, basically by adding more material to the weak spot. I believe that the CRDs have to use a steel collar which is lower profile.
