Note that for aftermarket steel wheels the training magnet cannot be used and that a 125kHz transponder is necessary to retrain the EVIC to the sensors. This process can be done by the dealer with a DRB-III tool. The ID's of each sensor must be written down and assigned a location (LF, RF, RR, LR, SP). They are then rewritten to tell the EVIC which position each sensor is in.

so what happens when you rotate tires using these sensors? Do you have to retrain to make sure the EVIC knows you moved them to a new location?

OKAY there seams to be some mis-information going on here.

There are 2 types of TPMS out there.

The early ones used in 05 needed a magnet to reset and to initialize to the system. Thus the price and the fact that they will not work on steel wheels.

The newer ones on the 06's and newer do not need magnets and will self program. I just got new AEV Bridgers, new tires and NEW TPMS. each cost me about 30.00 from a dealership in Portland OR (link below). Then i needed to buy the retainer nuts (sold seperately). The TPMS fit perfectly and once mounted on the KJ they logged on to the system within 5 miles of driving. NO magnets.

This was all part of my fact finding tour BEFORE i got the wheels.

Basiclly you are here:

NO steel wheels (sorry dude)
at least 1 new sensor, and the magnet to initialize it.

Check this link to get the sensores, and dont forget the retainer nuts if you cant re-used the old ones.
input your VIN and get the correct info on the TPMS for your KJ.

You got the cut-off year wrong there. It's the '04 and earlier that required magnets. Mine is '05 and it doesn't need one.

So the soft 8s are a no go then huh? bummer. Is there absolutely no way to just shut the stupid system off and then I can take out the sensors?

Dealer told me no when I asked the same thing last fall. It's a safety thing and like posted earlier all new passenger cars now have them. Get use to it, they are not going away...kinda like the seatbelt. I would think that Crager would make a new version Soft 8 that would fit TPMS since all new cars are going to need them but who knows.

So they can do it but they won't? If they can, then maybe I can find someone that will. Just not Jeep.

I'm willing to bet that you can turn it off if you're willing to modify your car's wiring. There's a write-up for how to disable the dash-light on the Tacoma (http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showt ... light=tpms), so I'm guessing something similar can be done for the KJ. The KJ does also have an alarm that chimes once when the light comes on, atlleast my '06 does. You'd want to disable that, too, or else you'd hear the "ding!" and not know what it's whining about if the light is disabled.

I really hate the TPMS in my KJ. It has alerted me about 20 times over the 2+ years that I've had the Jeep. Not once was there ever a single tire with a pressure problem. I checked all 5 tires each time. Every time, however, the weather was changing with a cold front coming through and a dramatic drop in relative barometric pressure.

you dont have aftermarket valve stem caps do you that are made from stainless steel or chrome? I overheard the tire tech at my shop saying that people install blingy caps on their TPS valves and they dont go together, something about the stainless or chrome caps conflicting with the sensors and that you should always use the factory plastic crappy ones that came on there...maybe 100% hogwash, but i'm just forwarding what I heard..I don't have those sensors in my KJ thankfully. Never know... with these "knowledgeable" techs. LOL

No, I don't have the bling stem caps on my Jeep. All bling has been turned to black, with the exception of the wheels which will be black shortly. I don't really want to alter the wiring on my KJ either. I guess I'll try to get the TPMS installed in the new wheels, have the tire tech try and get them in the right spots so they can signal the computer and turn the warning off and if that doesn't work. I may just stick with my moderately successful black tape. :)

Are... are you saying that of course it should react this way when the weather changes, or just that this is what's causing it right or wrong? If it's the former, I disagree. My '06 Tacoma also has TPMS and they have never mis-fired once. I had to air a tire down just to make sure they were actually working. Only then did the dash light go on.

Mine have the stock plastic caps. They're not the same as the cheap plastic caps on non-TPMS valve stems. They have a rubber gasket up under the cap, and the manual says not to replace them with caps that weren't designed for TPMS valve stems.

I can't speak for jpsmith, but as for me, I know I have had mine go off when a cold front hit, but the tire pressure was a hair low so they should have gone off. I drove around on them for a while and they heated up and the sensor turned off. They seem to be really sensitive on my KJ. But this is the first time the friggin thing won't shut off for me. I hate mine.

BTW, your EVIC if you have one is also going to warn you about tire pressure problems. No tape can fix that!

Why can't you use the DIY training magnet with aftermarket steel wheels if you can use them with OEM steel wheels?

more to the point, 05-7s are self-learning, so why do you need to retrain them? I know a NEW sensor needs to be "woken up", but why can't that be done with the training magnet as well?
