I'm in the concrete jungle here in the SF bay area...near ga_repoman. I assume you're in Reno by your city slogan. I go ATVing to the ghost towns in NV about once a month, but do "day rides" near the Pine Nuts/Johnson Lane. Been hitting the Sweetwaters and even the Hiltons Flying M ranch lately...lots to explore out there. We're doing a ride to Rochester/Aurora/Lucky Boy Pass between Hawthorne and Bridgeport in a few weeks.

Checked out your cardomain page...good job, and gotta love white! Doesn't show the dirt as much, but also keeps it cooler in the desert. You have the type of wheeling a wish for, woods! All public land is locked up out here, especially the redwoods, my favorite for (outlaw) wheelin'....long ago. So I have to drive a few hours to the Sierras and Nevada for my fun....but moslty rocks.
I think the key to making the OTT lift work on daily drivers is the longer bumpstops. They keep the strut from bottoming out.

Thanks, and I hear ya...OTT lifts are not for hard wheeling. There are better lifts for more money....though I didn't want to start a feud over it

This is a great site, with a lot of people sharing info on KJ's...it's saved me a lot of time and money.

Have you ever been out by Bridgeport? There are some cool loops from highway 338. You can go up Sand Canyon over to Pine Grove and loop around to Rockland, then come back over the hill thru Nye Canyon. Not very technical, but great scenery, a few mines, and some challenging spots.

Also might want to check out the trail to the summit of Mt Patterson at 12,000 feet before the USFS blocks it to 4 wheelers. Its do-able with an OTT lift with bumpstops since its not as rocky as most NV trails. Cool ghost town at 9000 feet called Belfort. Its a good ride for hot days to beat the heat. The switchbacks down the backside are narrow and carved into a STEEP cliffside. Lots of water and trees down there.

Guess i will be a odd man out as well and say I've had Rusty's installed for a bit over a year, and so far they are great. Smooth, and gave me just the right look. I'm not sure what kit you have from Rusty's, but I went with the full kit, shocks, and had them professionally installed.

Now when I am ready to step up and get that 4" Frankin?? lift, I will go for that next. until then Rusty is doing just fine. ;-)

I now have 7k miles on the OTT and NO probs with my front suspension. Nothing has blown-up/failed/squeaked/rubbed/broken/banged/clunked....even done some light wheeling. But the OE springs are too soft for serious wheeling. A stiffer valved strut might help, but a stiffer spring (higher spring rate) would be best for off-roading. But for me, the smooth highway and around town ride is just fine for now.

I think we need to support ANY small business that is willing to make useful products for us KJ owners. Rusty's was good to me, and even had good customer service over the phone. (disclaimer: that doesn't mean that everyone, all the time, will never have a problem with them...just that my transaction went smooth, and the product worked as advertised)

Yoy yo...is homeboy too old school for you? Glad to see you caught that. And yes, homeboys has ONE "e" in it....not three "o's".

As far as this whole thread goes (I dont know how it got brought back to life), I was one that wanted a cheap lift, but after I realized I WILL WHEEL HARD, I decided against it. But the ONLY REAL COMPLAINT about the OTT lifts, is a bad ride, but as many say, its JUST AS BAD AS STOCK... and that is fine by many, myself included! So, yah, I think I'm done.

Michael-dba, I said the exact same thing about springs and dampers in another thread and I didn't receive a warm welcome. Someone actually said that using MD springs with no bumper and no winch would make it ride like a cadillac or a tracker and that is not what they are interested in. They suggest going HD and no bumper and winch. They seem to prefer less droop and a firmer ride. To top it off they are using extended bump stops with OME struts limiting the travel even more!

The other side of it is, 99.99999999% of those of us who are lifted have scooted the clevis further down the front shock, or have a small spacer on top of it, thus necessitating a longer bumpstop :roll:

I am talking about using the lift how it was designed to be used. If you stack conduit nuts on the bottom of the strut,you only have to extend the bumpstop the thickness of the total number of nuts. a 2" bump stop will still take a way total travel. It would be better to shave it down close to the thickness of the total number of conduit nuts.

I'm pretty there is a picture around here somewhere of the liberty with the OEM and extended bumps flexing, and it is FAR more than stock

If I find it I'll let you know :wink:
