Warranty means crap.. Take it from me. My KJ is 03 Renny with 85,000kms. Looks like she was to the dealership for her regular maitenance from the previous owner (all old reciepts). Here latly my KJ has been acting up because it was never used. Previous owner was an old fart, chruch goin type that towed a boat now and then. So now that I have it and its actually being driven I'm finding lots of bugs but I guess that comes with it.
Anyways I got side tracked about the warranty. Warranty is only as good as the place thats servicing it. Right now chrysler has left me two weeks with my vehicle sitting on the lot and they wouldnt look at it, after it was towed in. Now they finally looked at it, deemed my issue a fire hazard and it has been put back on the lot to wait for parts to arrive. Yes its under warranty, but for all the inconvience i had to go through its not worth it. It has me turned from ever buying Chyrsler product again.
I've been ticked for 3 weeks now, I'll be best kind when I finally get her back. The -20 something weather doesn't help either when you walk to work.

right now im worried about the transmission. it doesnt feel too strong.

Your transmission is a NV3550. It's pretty much bulletproof, especially behind a lowly V6. I had one behind a built 318 V8 in a 1998 Dodge Ram pickup and I beat the snot out of it with no problems. So you had to replace the clutch...clutches wear just like brakes. But the tranny itself will be fine.

Also, you want to get rid of your Liberty and buy a 2000-2004 Wrangler or Grand Cherokee? You're going to have the same chance of running into problems as you do with your Liberty. Grand Cherokees are VERY finicky in their old age. If anything I'd go with the Wrangler...but you're losing alot of cargo space and comfort.

I plan on getting at least 200,000 miles out of my Liberty's drivetrain...and I have the same drivetrain as you do pal. I beat mine up pretty good and haven't had any problems, ever. Oil and fluid changes, spark plugs and brakes...probably a clutch one of these days. So far the durability and strength of the Liberty has really impressed me. It's my daily driver/trail rig and it will be for awhile. I'm not afraid to go anywhere, anytime. Long trips, off road, to the corner store, etc.

Just keep your Liberty and save the money you would spend on another car for whatever might come up maintenance wise.

Best advice.

Also, skip the warranty from a 3rd party like TjKJ said.. Only get a warranty from the OEM

The KJ will last into the 200K mile range if you just do the regular maintanence.

Why would anyone want a Civic after driving in the KJ?

I was thinking of selling awhile back but realized how verstale the kj is. I may buy an old wrangler someday for kicks and to maybe get more involved in the local offroading club that uses seriously modded wranglers and other stuff but the kj can haul all of my camping and photography gear and still do most of the offroad trails i need it for so it is the clear choice for me right now.

I DONT CARE ABOUT RIDE QUALITY. I WOULD MUCH RATHER HAVE PERFORMANCE OVER COMFORT. MAJORITY OF THE TIME I RIDE ALONE. HAVING A BACK SEAT IS USEFULL MAYBE 5 TIMES A YEAR. IM REALLY UPSET BECAUSE THIS JEEP WAS PICKED BY MY DAD, FOR ME, BEFORE HE DIED OF CANCER. NOW I CAN BARELLY AFFORD IT. TO HAVE A MAINTENANCE ISSUE WITH IT THAT I COULDNT FIX WOULD BE SO TERRIBLE.

you've got $500 worth of parts you haven't even installed yet you have no money for emergency repairs? Seems like a no brainer to me, sell the parts and put the money aside just in case if you are that worried about a repair being needed in the near future.

You can't afford any unexpected maintenance with any vehicle from the sounds of it. Why by another one that is just as likely to have issues as the one you have now? Vehicles aren't trouble free. Things break, wear out etc. You may want performance but can you afford to really be pushing any vehicle off road anyway? Things break and wear out a whole lot easier when you wheel them. How are you gonna buy a new vehicle with no money anyway? You may not like the Liberty as much as another vehicle out there but from the sounds of it you need to keep it and use it until you can afford a new one. Also if you have no money for an extended warranty, maybe you should sell the $500 in unused parts so you can put it towards what you feel you need and not what you may want.

Dude either you mistakenly hit caps lock or you seriously need to chill... you're asking a question which isn't that well thought out ( everything may have problems) and are getting peoples opinions of what they like about their liberty. If you do not WANT opinions don't ask from them.

I know for a fact I've seen posts from you making comments about how much money you're pulling in from your new job, and you buying a new lift, and saving up for the JBA 6 inch.... If you seriously have no money, take it from a college kid, stop spending money on stuff you do not NEED.

Pick a direction and follow the path you choose, don't try 5 different paths

Sorry If if comes off as rude, I just don't get it

Dave

Sounds like a money management problem to me. Its fun to outfit these Jeeps, but if you are living day to day and can't afford to fix them if something breaks, doesn't it make a little sense to start saving for a car repair fund? My advice would be save until you have $2500 in the bank, blow $1000 on pimping your ride, save back up to $2500, blow another $1000....rinse and repeat.

going easy on your ride while you have no money is also a no-brainer to me.

My mom is was always telling me I needed to get a new car and a new house and blah blah blah. Must be nice being able to have everything you want or need, but not all of us just sit around with unlimited funds. Heck, my wife bugs me about buying a new house about every other month, and we can't even afford the one we have. Really sticks in my craw.

OK here goes, may upset you but...

Everyone needs to learn sooner or later how to drive on and off road. They also need to learn how to do minor ( atleast ) repairs by themselves if possible.

I have seen pictures of some of the things you put the Liberty through and no wonder you have had problems, running with the exhaust smashed flat for months was one major problem, installing the wrong plugs another, learing how to drive a stick correctly another.

I have 120,000 on mine close to 80,000 lifted, and have had to replace the idler pulley/ serpetine belt and U Joints thats really it besides regular maintanance items. Why you would want to go out and buy something older, less reliable, worse gas mileage is way beyond what I can even imagine.

Save money up and learn how to do things correctly, wheeling included!

Tom... Although my dad is no wheeler... But you sound like my dad... Good Guy

Mines 67,000 only issue is a water pump... My fault 100% as far as I'm concerned too deep of water. Since college started I have very little play money... At most 200 a year ( which includes "play" driving) So if you cannot afford to fix it, don't risk it, there will be later days

I use Wachovia for my bank and I have a Way-2-Save account with them. every time I use my debit card $1 gets transferred into that savings account. builds up pretty quick without even noticing it. And yes, I can transfer the money in the savings back to my checking whenever I want with no fees or penalties. 8)

If you can not afford to fix a moderately expensive repair on your vehicle, say $1000 repair, you really should not be driving one at all in my opinion.Yes everyone is tight with there money these days, all the more to spend some on the upkeep of your vehicle. If you wheel it expect to break it,there is no way around that.My KJ is my daily driver and I wheeled the snot out of it,yes I have broken stuff but I have the know-how and tools/parts to fix it(and a healthy check book always helps).Buying a older vehicle when you can not afford to upkeep the current one is kinda digging yourself in a massive hole that you will not be able to get out of since the "new" old vehicle will require more money to upkeep.Scrape all the mods(sell the parts) and set aside the money for maintenance and keep on the pavement for a few months to keep other stuff from breaking. If you can not afford a oil change right now why on earth would you risk breaking a $2000+ part wheeling? Also like others have stated learn how to stop buying non-needed items, and not just stuff for the Jeep either and yes this means that $100 pair of blue jeans when the $15 pair will do.Better yet just park the Jeep and start taking the bus,a few months of that and less spending you can save a ton of money.

i am bad with money. i know it. i was doing good but then i had some stuff going on in my life and i needed something to take my mind off of it. kodey (my friend who works at chrysler) said my front diff is leaking. it took me 5 tries to start my jeep after work. it would start then grumble then die. it had a messed up idle like carb engines. it didnt throw any codes but im going to start the process of looking for another jeep. if anyone wants to buy my new springs and shocks let me know. all my aftermarket stuff will be coming off and will be for sale unless things start lookin up.

Matt, I'm not doggin on you, but if you can't afford to fix the KJ now, what makes you think you can afford a $400+/mo car payment?

I really hate to see somebody get themselves into the same jam that many of us got into when we were younger.

But, if you decide to get a JK

I am going to tie you to a tree and treat it like a rusted out 85 Bronco II if we ever wheel together
