From what I hear most of the problems with auto lockers comes from going around corners. On ice less torque = more traction. If you go around a corner and start to slide the best thing to do is throw it in neutral. Powering around the corner will only make it worse (unless you are in under steer and want to 'fish tail' around the corner but the e-brake works well for this). Putting it in neutral will allow the wheels to roll and stop the wheels from sliding and regain some traction. Then you can steer to safety. With an auto locker when you go around a corner the outside wheel unlocks and becomes a free spinning tire. Because it has no torque you have max traction on that wheel. However, the inside wheel now has all the torque. Remember that on ice more torque equals less traction. So if you power that inside tire too much you lose traction on that tire. If the outside tire does not have enough traction either you will fish tail or spin around. So having the locker in will require you to change your driving habits. Does the locker mean you have less traction than a lsd? yes and no. If you go around the corner and throw the vehicle into neutral then you will have max traction around that corner locker or not. But if you are in gear the lsd has the advantage in that it provides power to both wheels around the corner thus spreading the torque out. Essentially the lsd is a compromise between the open (max traction around icy corner) and auto locker (least traction around icy corner).

even your a beautiful explanation in fact the thing that concerns me, besides the risk of the blocks in the bends giving too much gas, is the fact that the couple would be transferred to the wheel inside the corner .
I am somewhat undecided whether to opt for a D-locker or a DTT , we both have their merits and defects, I do not know which to choose :(

Maybe you can have both. Put a DTT in your rear axle. Then, buy a second rear axle for cheap from the junk yard and put a DL in it. In the summer time use the DL axle. In the winter throw on the DTT axle. Think of it as a selectable axle.

Okay, all this talk has made me reconsider my plans to get a DL in the rear. I guess I could get an arb but there's a lot of hassle with the arb. There's more cost and more work to do. You also have to find someone capable of installing it. Lately, I've been thinking of getting a side-by-side ATV. If I do that a DTT would be all I need anyway. A locker is always nice to have but its not always needed. It depends on where you wheel and how much of it you do. Because my vehicle is not my dd I feel I could put a locker in it and still drive it on occasion in the winter. Although, it's already a handful to drive in the winter with MT tires.

Some good info here.

I have a DL in the rear and a DTT in the front, I love the set up.

I don't have snow to drive in but when I got it installed the guys told me if I go up north to be careful driving in the snow on the windy roads cause I would loose traction.

I've got the DTT in the rear. With it and the Silent Armors I can get through the hills here in KY after an ice storm with no problems. It's not mountains with tons of snow, but I've had to move the Jeep to another parking spot before because I couldn't stand up on what I just easily drove across.

i have an open front diff, and a detroit locker in the rear, the full carrier replacement one, no-spin auto-locker, any throttle and its locked

i had my locker last winter, with my new at the time firestone destination MT's, and it was AMAZING!

yes, taking off from stoplights on ice on any side slope, even flat ground, the rear end WILL slide out, just on-off-on-off the gas to keep it straight until you get up to speed. and going around corners, foot totally off the gas. as long as you know whats going on in that rear end in certain weather situations, then youll be fine, just be careful! :D

well dont get me wrong I love my DL Im just thinking it wasnt the best choice for me since the KJ is my one and only vehicle that runs and drives lol

Ive only had one incident with my Jeep with the DL in it and it could have been a number of things, I was on my way to KS Rocks Park from school, and the night before the event we got some snow and ice and I was on the highway to the park and I dont know if it was bc of the locker or just me being young and dumb but I hit some ice on the road going straight and doing the speed limit and it sent me into the ditch going really fast and it scared the crap out of me bc I had a friend in the vehicle with me, I thought the Jeep was going to roll bc the ditch was a slight down slope and then a went up at a good angle but luckily it didnt roll but it could have easily been my fault and not the locker

That happened to me one time although I was the passenger with my brother driving. It was in a mustang LX and we were going straight and hit a patch of black ice. The next thing we were in the ditch, flipped once and landed on the tires in the snow bank. Popped 3 tires and dented the roof but thankfully no injuries.

Just buy a ARB air locker, unlocked when you want it and locked with a flip of a switch when you want it locked.

dtt front and rear and your neighbors may start using you for a taxi :)

i've used both in very snowy icy conditions, i felt the margin of error for 'accidental lockup and fishtail/powerslide' was better with the DTT

but to say that the locker is crap in snow/ice is maybe more of opinion, it made me pinch the seat a few times ;) but never ditched me

thanks for your suggestions and impressions, I think at this point that will opt for DTT

I hope that the DTT joined the TCS can give me a hand in most

is the snow bank
be in a wall but it is 4.5 meters away from the entrance,
we were the week before Christmas, continued to make snow storm for about 4 days up to 3 m of accumulation, we were stuck for a week without electricity and heating because of the many avalanches, while the KJ reposed in my box.
after that week, and continued to snow a lot and the roads were bad and not very clean throughout the winter. for what I wanted to improve the already good skills of my KJ

Did you know you can fool the DTT into acting like a locker if you use the brakes. For the rear use the hand brake and for the front use the foot break. The break fools the DTT into locking kind of like on the hummers. I think you would be fine with the DTT. The DL is really only if you plan to do a lot of off-roading. Locker aficionados will argue that a locker allows you to keep moving if you have one wheel off the ground. However, if you are just driving through snow or mud you don't really have that problem. If you are worried about the on road manners of the DL and you don't off-road that much then the DTT will be more than enough.
