One place I can see "Full Time 4wd" being highly useful for offroad, is in places like Moab with lots of slick rock. When I was there I hated driving around with everything locked up always binding. I seen 1st hand where a 2wd low is highly desired. However, the AWD position of the 242 would effectively do the same thing.........give you better control in high traction situations without all the binding associated with full lock up in the t-case. I don't know how it would fare in the gas versions, but I can definitely see the CRD using just two modes...........cruising around Moab's slickrock in AWD mode all day without binding all the time and only using 4low for the steep/technical sections.

I’m half tempted to swap the NP 231 for the NP 242 in my Cherokee. :pepper:

AND, they make a 4.0 low range gear set for the 242 as well. So you get the best of all worlds.....

I'm three quarters tempted myself......
I have a V6 auto with a 242 and I'm thinking of seriously switching it with the 231 in my manual CRD. :juggle:

I want to know more about this 241.
Whats the difference between it and the 231, and could I do a straight swap with a 241 for my 231

the 241or is a bad boy, used in 3/4 and 1 ton dodge rams, oh yeah and the jeep rubicons. it will fit, but you'll need new drive shafts and the shifter will be backwards if I understand it correctly. I believe there has been discussion about this before, someone also mentioned swapping in an atlas as another alternative as well.

For a badass t-case, I can deal with a backwards lever. I'll just put some duct tape on the handle and relabel it. :P

As for the shafts, I'd just get new ones made and be rollin around with a sweet booty t-case. lol

This is something I might start looking in to.

might want to look at a new front diff while you're at it, more torque means it would be easier to break the somewhat weak dana 30a.

While the full time AWD would be great for the wife, Im more of a RWD 4x4 when I need it. Most of the snow we got (including the 10-20in storms) were done in mostly 2wd. The only times I needed or used 4x4 is for when I got stuck on a hill behind some dumb dumb that thought his fwd acura could get through that much snow. Now for the 30+ inch storm 4x4 got me to work and back to my nice warm home (obviously I didn't even try 2wd).

But Im glad to hear you like your jeeps system! Its always great to be 100% satisfied with your rig, I know I am with mine. I'm so satisfied with mine I dont even drive my talon on beautiful days anymore. :JEEPIN:
