wow really didn't expect that much about this topic... I am really just now getting the time and money in order to be able to do stuff myself. I understand that it should have been taken care of, but i have done my diffs, transfer case and am going to do my fuel filter... so sorry that I haven't done this yet. I will do it this week.

yeah... and since I plan on keeping this forever... I want to do it correctly. I don't see anything anyone has said as hateful btw, I like the sarcasm and critiques because it helps me learn!

Ok now you can all laugh at me: where the heck is the fuel filter? For some reason I was thinking you couldn't replace / change them on the liberty, no clue why I thought that.

Also, riptricket, if effort is your prime de-motivator (?) then you might think about using a lubelocker gasket on there. Personally I hated removing the RTV on the transmission. Also my transmissions machined surface was pretty sharp at the edges, and made it even less fun to remove the bits that were on there. Removing the RTV was 70% of the job and I'm glad I won't have to do that again. I'll be doing a filter change every 15 and a flush + filter change every 30. I figure I'll buy a gasket when I do my next change, but if the old one doesn't leak after reinstalling it, I'll replace it every other time.

If $ is the main reason for not doing it, then a $20 gasket might not be the best idea.

fuel filters in the tank, have to either chew through the fuel access hatch under the carpet in the cargo area, or drop the tank

it's supposed to be a long term filter but it's good to change it every now and then anyway 30-60k miles or longer if you're brave

supposta be life time but they get nasty pretty quickly

The fuel filter is located in almost the most inaccessible spot they could find - on top of the fuel tank towards the front. I'm sure there are some other spots they could have used with less access but I'm clueless as to where they might be...

EDIT: Jarhead is correct, for the '05+ models the filter is combined with the sending unit in the tank - for earlier models it is located outside the tank:

Blue section is the location for earlier models, red section is '05 and later.

So do you guys just run low on gas and unbolt the tank? Can this be done at home?

not all models have an access hatch in the cargo area either fyi

i did mine in the driveway before i put on the tank skid, i had bought one 20k prior and returned it after not being able to acquire something suitable to chew through the junk they use to seal the hatch

Pulled up the '05 FSM again and I had missed this:
Quote:
The fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator are combined within the fuel pump module assembly. They are not serviceable.

So it looks like you would need to replace the regulator assembly to get a new filter - yay!

A hot air gun and a large flat-blade screwdriver worked for me ;)

I figured I would change out my fuel pump module assembly/filter every 100,000 miles. Image

Would it be possible to put some sort of aftermarket fuel filter in the fuel line between the tank and engine and just keep that changed?

Yes, but what are you going to do when your in-tank filter get’s clogged?

the on/in tank filters are, or can be, a PITA to deal with

but they are better than a majority of inline canister filters

I don't care if i ever.. ever..

ever..

eveeerrr

see another chevy or any other manu's STUPID filter fitting that uses those plastic compression sleeves to release the filter

Hey, while you’re at it, install one of those PML transmission pans with the drain plug. The service tech recommended a drain and fill every 15,000 miles. He said you would be amazed how much difference it makes to keep fresh fluid in your transmission.

Good advice. I use a vacum pump to do mine inbetween filters.

CRD uses a 545RFE 5 speed overdrive transmission and Gassers use 45RFE (early KJ) or a 42RLE (2003 on).
545RFE requires a filter and fluid change at 30K intervals.
Troy's transmission heat chart is ever so correct. Heat kills and degraded fluids with dirty filters cannot "transfer" said heat properly and that means failed parts in whatever transmission you have.
I have installed an aftermarket transmission cooler and our LOST JEEPS chapter even hosted a Tech Day installing same on other KJs and a fellow had a trans temp guage and he reported a dramatic temp drop!
Presently doing a timing belt replacement now (100K miles!) on the 4 cylinder diesel but the transmisson is still hanging in there. And I attribute this to following a maintence schedule.

Wow! I had no idea where the gasser fuel filters were located.
CRD diesel fuel filter is on the fire wall and maintence schedules call for replacement every 20K.
I change mine every 12.5K due to this great fine dust we have here in the desert and the fact I run Biodiesel occasionally.
Every time I replace it it feels like I got a gasser tuneup, new spark plugs and such!!
