Come on guys, We all know many idiots drive on the road. We also should all know and let the 17 year old kid reading this that when your steering wheels are driven by an engine you have more directional control. That does not say that you can stop any faster. Be safe but have some fun. I've had lot's of FUN cars and trucks over the years and I buy and build them out of a passion for machines and the thrill of driving. I've rolled at least 25 times in my life but never on road or un-anticipated and always in something built to roll over with minimal damage. "Always carry spare oil". My Liberty will not be for rolling and not all that much offroad, IFS, clearance, torque. I'm not sure if ultra conservative and off road should be used in the same sentence. :JEEPIN:

Most times you don't need it :banghead:

Dont come to wyoming then u will get raped on the mountian roads here my half brothers dads thought the same thing as u had a suburban with great snow and ice tires on the pass from dubois to jackson hole and was just in 2wd and lost control going 45 and fliped his car and went into a 10 foot tall snow drift and died from to snow breaking through his windows and suffocating him :|

Now please take the time to reread what I wrote before saying anything.
I was talking about Midwest and East coast, now in my geography lessons Wyoming ( with a capitol W by the way) was not in either area.
Plus I have seen plenty of various 4 wheel drives flipped over as well from sliding or going over hills/mountains. Common sense again which a lot of people do not have.
Would be nice if people could use spell check!

Case in point to what the majority of people have said. Just yesterday I was on my way to do some x-mas shopping with my girlfriend. Was exiting the highway and doing 45 in a 65 due to road conditions. I had it in full time 4wd. Not because it gives me extra confidence but because all of the intersections had tons of snow on them from the plows and I was sick of spinning tires. Anyhow I was coming off the highway slowing down the whole time. A car was at the stoplight which I would estimate to be 1000ft from the exit. So I had about 1000ft give or take to slow down from 45. Well I got on ice and was fighting the car to slow down and ended up bumping the person at the light at about 5mph. See how well 4wd helped me stop? :banghead:

Studded tires where and when legal are the best solution for even stopping. Chains do little to nothing on ICY snowy streets.
see this from back home http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KL6xzJUlNvo happens every winter. I had studded and sometimes chained tires every year.

NEWSFLASH Panama Canal was closed a couple of days ago due to record rainfall. Streets flooded, Houses gone, Unfortunately loss of life. I don't have water at my house due to flooding, I'm going to the boat I work on for a hot shower then meeting up with a couple other trucks and a few dancing peppers :pepper: putting chains on locked 35's and taking advantage of this catastrophe. Have a good day. :pepper:

Less power in the back?? Or MORE power in the back?? Either way, most people that think 4WD is a godsend for winter driving and will hit the brakes when they start to slide, not give a little more gas like you or I will to get the front tires to pull us through the corner. Those same people don't realize it won't help them stop!

PS: I'll be the one pulling you out of the ditch on that icey mountain pass. You can thank me later

My first car was a 1963 Volkswagen bug. I bought it at 15 and it sat in the back yard then high school shop (with me tinkering) until I was 15 1/2 and had a permit to drive. At my age 16 it could pull the front tires off the ground. 11.2 1/4mi. With chains on it in the packed snow "not ice" it went like a bat out of hell. Faster than most 4wd's in my area. The big problem was turning. It did have enough power to power clutch it to the side and steer though. I thought of adding steering brakes for fun but it was a street car. It was just a blast. No I didn't go fast where other cars were. One day in the deep snow the bead on a fram remote oil filter blew because of the COLD oil and high volume oil pump and I lost all the oil. Being dumb and young I wasn't watching the oil pressure gauge and bang. I didn't feel the engine seizing because of the stereo. ( at least that's my story) With my dads help Fram bought me a new engine. The outer filter body was gone. All cars have 4wbrakes some have 4WD, all work in snow at least a little. I think the original was relating to how fast can you drive in 4 wheel high. Some have answered that pretty well. We still don't know what transfer case he has which will definitely change things at least some. I've never tried it with a temp gauge on the transfer case yet, so I don’t have a positive answer.
I'm sure somewhere on the net we can find forums RE: common sense, responsibility, or drivers education, or spelling for that matter. Let's talk about what we can do, or want to do, or have done to or in our Jeeps, cars, or trucks. Sorry I'm a noob here and to forums altogether excluding Chevelle and Camaro tech, but the wealth of knowledge on this site is excellent for the KJ. I'll try to stay out of these kinds of posts in the future.

The above statement, along with others that have said similair are actually false.

Now if you know how to drive stopping on ice in 4wd is much quicker then in 2wd,even 2wd with ABS.I bet I can stop faster on ice in 4wd without barely using the brakes then you can in 2wd with ABS.It's called downshifting, does not work very well on quick decels in 2wd of course unless you like the rear axle passing the front real quick.

This does not work with full time 4wd and is not a reason to drive around all the time in part time 4wd(you will break stuff),and most importantly does not mean to speed in part time 4WD.If you need part time 4wd you should not be doing 40mph+.

Thats were ur wrong again even if i was in a ditch i wouldnt need help getting out. and yes when u put ur jeep in 4wd u get less power in the back but even less than that in the front its not a godsend and why in the hell would u ever be on the brakes I KNOW THAT.

yet in your first post you talk about being in 2WD and having less power in the back? Is your jeep front wheel drive? :banghead: do you ever think things thru in your head before you type them? or just spew random crap online??
