if you think youre going to be disappointed with the trutrac i would go straight to the locker. for around another $100 plus cost of compressor (which you can do cheap) you could get an ARB. think of it as youre already getting a decent deal on the front so you can spend a little more in the rear.

but.. then like you said i'll need a compressor, and lines, and switches... then i'll want the air tank to run tools from.. and more lines, fittings.. ect. but having an ARB would be the bee's knee's.

i think i'm leaning towards the normal detroit locker instead of the DTT. Does anyone on here have a Detroit Locker ?

DTT in front, Detroit locker in rear would be my choice.

i guess no one has a detroit that is reading this... it seems to be 'the' locker when not going selectable so maybe i'll give it a try. Now if only that $630 could appear under my pillow

I've driven many vehicles with Detroits in them, very good lockers but never had one in my KJ as snow/ice can be fun with a auto locker in the rear.

thank you for your input... in the vehicles that you drove with the detroit did they BANG and SNAP while going down the road? with my aussie after making a right or left hand turn (like at a 4 way stop) after shifting from 1st to 2nd it would 'set its self' and BANG! could feel the rear end shift. is that a characteristic of the detroit?

i loved my aussie in snow/ice... that's why i'm going back to a locked rear end. driving in snow/ice without a locker is like only having 2wd when you know you should have 4wd.

I have the Detriot set up front and rear with 4.10 gears in my KJ, I went through a winter here in WI and IL and had no major issues with it, when I wanted to play I could break it loose, but I can do that on dry pavement also. I get the occasional pop from the gears, once a month maybe.

My kid is learning to drive now and he chirps the tires often when making turns but as I said he is still learning.

If I was to do it over again it would be air lockers 1st and then to the set up I have now.

I asked Trail Quest last year about the gears and kits. Here is the information they gave me. I never ordered but I am also close to finally biting the bullet. I suppose these prices are not valid anymore but any opinions on this information is appreciated.

You can see I was interested in the gears, installation kit and lockers. Anyone know if this would be everything I need? Would there be any kind of recommendation?

"The Liberty 4.10 gears for the front part #5066085AA are $254.95, the MOK is part #D30KJ-Maskit $121.95.
The 4.10 gears for the rear part #4720973 are $276.95, the MOK is part #C8.25-Maskit $113.95. (these are Dana Spicer gears)
If you get an ARB the MOK would be a different number.
The ARB is $819.95, the compressor is $229.95.

Shipping is not included."

only recommendation id make it to call around and see if you can find a front diff out of a 4 cyl liberty that already has 4.10's in it. then you dont need the front 4.10's, front install kit, or labor to install the gears (or labor to install the front diff.. it's not hard you can do it yourself). I just found a front diff with 4.10's for $300 delivered.

Thanks for the advice. I think that is something I am definitely going to look into. Finding a front diff with them already installed may be a good way to go. Time to start looking around.

update. got my $300 front diff swapped in today. it was a messy... in depth job but someone had to do it  but first i cleaned it up inside... put in new seals made sure everything was good to go.. then put it all back together with some fresh black RTV... and once it was in filled it up with about a quart and half of 75w140 synthetic lube ( i know i know mineral would be better but it's a open diff.. syth. will be just fine). And just to be sure before putting the cover on i counted the teeth on the ring and pinion... and the 4.10 tag didn't lie! i was happy all the teeth looked nice.. and with under 50k. it was still in great shape. Only thing i ran into.. was this diff with 4.10's in it mustve been from a 02-04 because it had bearings behind the seals.. where my 06 had bushings behind the seals. so i had new bushings to put in and not the bearings. but all the bearings felt perfect so i let them go. Plus when ordering my gears the 06 has different bolt sizes in the ring then the earlier KJ's.. but since i'm replacing my carrier with the detroit it didnt matter in my situation. but if i were changing to 4.10's and reusing my carrier i would've been in a pickle.

it goes in for the rear gear / detroit locker install this week :JEEPIN:

side note.... ended up getting CROWN (came in Motive box?) rear 4.10s gears instead of G2 since they were on back order and kept pushing the ship date back week by week. Only ended up being a few dollars more and now i have 1 complete install kit.. and the install kit that came with the new gears (just incase). So if the guy that installs them doesnt need the extra install kit i'll send it back for the $70. cant WAIT to drive this thing!! I have high expectations for my crawl ratio with 4.10's and in my 4.46:1 first gear :frankie: :JEEPIN:

If anyone wants a very nice 2006 front diff with 3.55's and 47000 miles let me know!

Let us know how much of a difference there is afterwards. I have been holding off on ordering these myself. I'd like to know roughly what RPM your at on the highway around 65-70mph. What tire size you running again?

Yeah, I'm running 265/70s also. What I'm afraid of is that at highway speeds my engine will be wrapped out at an insane RPM. With 4.10s what yalls highway RPMs?

With the 265-75s and 4.10s not that high at all, its loafing along
I'll ask chris tonight but he just drove up to Ohio from NC with no problems at all. Actually 265-70s or 245-75s I think are better setup with 4.10s then 265-75s are

This just aswered the question I had while reading this thread. Running 245/75 16 duratracs on moabs. I was thinking about whether it would be a good idea to swap to 4.10s or not with this tire size... I've noticed since I put that wheel tire combo on that I've lost a little bit of umph, but it is certainly driveable and it drives well. However, when I start thinking about adding a bunch of weight via skids, rock rails, bumpers, winch, roof rack... I start to wonder...

03CDKJ said he turns about 2260-2300 at 65 or so with 265-70-16s
I just ran up the road looking at mine at 55 I'm only turning about 1650 or so with 265-75s, with the OD switched off ( which is the way I run two lane roads most of the time) at 55 I'm at 2400-2450
I'll have to check at 70-75 what it is next time

and that's going from 3.73's to 4.10's... i think going from my 3.55's to 4.10's with 265/75/16's should be about perfect. i should have my jeep back either tomorrow night or wed. night. i dont know how i'm going to sleep till then. :JEEPIN:
