Holy crap!! All that mud from one time out?? Was that a serious mudding trip? If that is what is going to happen every time, I need to give this some thought!! :?

Man, once you hit the mud it never all comes out at once. Takes more than a couple washes to get all of it out. You always seem to discover more evey time you wash your Jeep. Mud just sucks, I try to stay as far a way as possible from it.

I was pulling mud and rocks out of my front skid months after wheeling. I usually just blast the garden hose in every opening I can find, front, t-case and gas tank skids. The frame rails underneath have large holes that collect mud too. Shoot a blast into one end and watch the gunk flow out the other.

It's true! I have a permanent dirt ring around where I park in the driveway. My wife calls my jeep "pigpen"

It's really only the front skid that acts like a shovel.
Hope this helps!

Ah yes, the infamous "mud induction port" on the front skid. I'd like to bolt some cover steel over that hole before I go out.

Idk what it is, but when a girl makes a thread, everyong jumps on it! Ive never seen a thread 2 days old with this many replies!

Anyway, the skids are not as bad as people are making them out to be. There are 4 of them . The tcase wouldnt be that bad since the opening is out the back. If you backed up in mud then it may get some in it. THe gas tank shouldnt get to much in it unless you just sink the jeep. The engine skid is the worse, then the tranny skid. Heres what they look like.

I do not have the tcase or the gas tank skid yet. Ill be getting those soon though. The tranny skid does work on the 02-04's, but you need to drill some holes. One hole on the back(tranny cross memeber) and one hole on the engine cross memeber. You do not have to drill on the engine cross memeber since the tranny skid is between it and the engine skid, so you would have to drill through the engine skid, and the cross memeber.

The hole on the left lined up fine, then I had to drill the hole on the right.

You do not have to take the skids off to change the oil, but some oil will get on the skids and if its not wiped off can drip for a couple of days. Ive been in some crazy mud and Ive never taken them off to clean them. Pull off the big stuff out by hand, then spray away.

What type of drill bit and or size did you use? I just got a stock tranny skid from a fellow KJer and I dont have the mounting bolts either. They look like regular bolts to me from your pics. it also looks like i can just use the same bolts that hold on the back part of the engine skid to attach the front part of the tranny skid to. Is that correct?

Yea, on the front you do not need to buy any bolts. I cant remeber for sure on the size I bought. Be sure to get grade 8 bolts. I think they were 2 1/2in long, I dont remeber the size at all, maybe 3/8? On the left side of my last pic, the hole didnt go all the way through, I had to drill out the top of it. On the right side, I had to drill a new hole all together. Be sure to center punch it, I dont remeber the size drill bit either. I had to use my floor jack as a drill press though. Those cross memebers are very thick, I set the drill on the jack then used my foot to jack it up. hehe. Also, there are 2 things that you need to bend up, you can almost see them in my 2nd pic. They are up in that hole where the oil comes out.

The skid should bolt right up to 05's and up.

I will bet that it is because my "girl" questions are easy for all of you to answer. "Guy" questions tend to be more technical and maybe some of us can't answer or don't want to put our foot in our mouth.... I did that once......

Thanks for the great pics. Between everything that has been posted and the diagram of the bottom of a KJ, I now understand where the skids go and what they protect. You folks are great!!

many of your other posts indicate you want to use your jeep to go trail riding....

in my opinion, you should get front and rear tow hooks, all available skids and "boulderbars" rocker rails before you spend money on any other trail ready product....before suspension lifts, before tires and wheels, before chrome....

questions are cool so take no offense.....if you're stressing over rinsing out the mud but not worrying about trashing your transmission, then you should keep asking questions here....and remember that folks like me are not always correct in their advice....keep reading, gets lots of viewpoints, and you'll be as knowlegeable as most of these guys....

yes, you can easily change your motor oil with the all-j transmission skid installed....
