If you go with the top rail,you wouldn't need to do the up sweep since the top bar would provide protection. What if you left the bottom flat and then made the top rail protrude further forward then the bottom? I think this would flow better with the KJ roof line and still give you the light protection.

I like the out of the box thinking.
