He seemed unhappy about the brand of gear I purchased (Genuine) but I told him that's the only brand you can find right now. He said "I know". I figured since they cost 3x what the Yukon gears do, they're 3x's good......apparently....not so much .

I understand his disconcern about the "GenuWHINE" gears, better unplug that CRD exhuast as not to here the rear gears whining.

Gear makers in order........
1) Precision Gear
1) Yukon
2) Dana/Spicer
3) Motive Gear
4) Richmond Gear
100000000000000000000001) GuenuWHINE Gears

And yes there is a reson for the two #1's up there,Yukon and Precision are the same high quility.

$700 for install is very good price.

I went to 4wheel Parts and the Yukons were on double secret national backorder as well as every other brand they carry. They even called the distributor who could give them no ETA. They only had 1 set of 4.10 gears in the whole country and those were the ones I bought. They were like $310 and located in Jacksonville, FL.

Since I am dealing with a timeline (I have access to a loaner car this week only) I figured "bird in hand".

Obviously, Dino knows his stuff better than I.

You should check the actual gear...
A lot of times what you'll find in a Yukon or other AM (Genuine, Sierra, Motive, Precision etc...) mfr gear set is a genuine OEM part.
As far as I know, no one is actually cutting AM (non helical) 4:10's for the D30A, so if you know what you're looking at, you'll probably see that they're Dana gears, Genuine box or not. Send me a pic and I'll let you know for sure.

My ignorance is showing again. I had two boxes; one was Genuine and the other Richmond. I opened the Genuine box to take a pic and there were lots of little pieces and a tube of RTV. The box said "everything you need for overhaul".

The other box had a label that said "Richmond" and this is what was in it:

Image

This is the actual gear right? Is the Richmond asstastic too? I see it hits #4 on the troy countdown.

Here are some reviews. it seems the world is all over the place on how they feel about the locker:

Cost me a rear axle
Date: Feb 22, 2008
Reviewer: A JeepReviews.com User from (Crown Point, IN)

Terrible!!! won't put one in my lawn tractor.
On-road it was almost dangerous, when it would locked up it would jerk the jeep sideways and bang, thought that the axle was coming through the floor. Off-road it worked slightly better until I had to back up and take a second run at an obsticle. It unlocked and then locked up suddenly under power. Blew the axle shaft and destroyed itself to a point it took 4 hours to get the center pin out and removed from the housing. Upgrade to ARB air lockers love them

Kick booty

Reviewer: A JeepReviews.com User from (San Diego.CA)

I am happy with my detroit , I run it in a f150 prerunner and it holds up to mexico and the barstow desert like nothing else in the world, I have had every other type of locker and l.s.d. diff break on my . the detroit id a true winner

Detroit Lockers Are Awsome
Date: Jan 30, 2007
Reviewer: A JeepReviews.com User from (Toluca, Mexico)

It has been a while since I installed my Detroit Locker, It is just Tough, It will ALLWAYS deliver the 100% Traction I need when I need it! You can't forget to turn them On/Off and you can still turn!

It's On road manners are definiteley not as good as an open differential, the D-locker will let you know it is there. The backslash incorporated into it's design will make changes from drive to coast harsh, Specially on low speed situations (nothing to worry about).

Curving Low Speed Small Radius: It will behave perfect as well as you DO NOT change from drive to coast or the other way around.

Curving Hi Speed Big Radius: Not even noticiable just a little understeer if you step hard on the gas while changing from coast to drive.

Banging: It does bang probably once every 30 to 50 miles not as loud as I have read, but you will hear it AND feel it! (this is part of the design, again nothing to wory about)

It's design is much tougher than the selectable competitors as it does not have spider gears.

The Detroit Locker is one of the best investments I have done in my Jeep and I would definiteley buy again (I might not need to because it will outlast my jeep!!!, but I might get another jeep jaja)

The Off Road improvement was HUGE

I deffiniteley recommend it to anyone that does serious wheeling. The only reason I didn't give it all the stars is because of its on road manners

I guess it was not meant to be. :(

Just got a call from the shop. He said the front diff is in and the rear gears are in but the Locker is the wrong one. He siad that the c clips would not go in.

The box said it was for a 29 spline 8.25 axle but he said it wouldn't fit. I guess that's that.

I pick it up later and I guess I am returning the DL to 4 wheel parts for refund or whatever... The whole point of this was to save some labor, I really don't want to pay labor again to try another part that may be wrong.

Very anticlimactic.

Do you have the part number off of the box? There should be no reason why it didn't fit.

Did you get this one:

When I ordered it, I asked them (in store) if they had an application chart to be sure I had the right one. it could be a right box wrong part situation.

Picked up the Jeep. He charged me $650 because the gears went right in and they got a pattern real easy. He told me if I got the right part, he'd put it in N/C. Pretty cool of him since he had nothing to do with the transaction.

that is pretty nice of him, so was it $650 for the gear install and the locker? would it have been any cheaper for just the gears?

he installed my new front diff up front as well and extended my tranny breather which apparently was only a button on top; no hose to extend.

That's the part number on the box but the locker does not look like the one in the photo. The photo can be generic, but I am stuck; he says it's wrong and part number says it right. He says the C clips did nit fit over the axle. Are we all sure that the CRD has the same rear axle as the gassers?
It's not like he does not want to do it, he offered to install the new one when I got it.

Further on down the road to bummerdom, I noticed on Saturday morning that my KJ is hemoraging tranny fluid. The whole bottom of the Jeep is soaked but it seems to be coming from the pan. I am going to have her towed to the shop Monday AM so they can find the source.

'02-'05 KJ(gas + CRD) rear axle part # is 52070350AB,the part # for '06 KJ's(gas + CRD) is 52114423AA.So it looks like the axles are different for the '06 KJ's then the older versions, but the C-clips are the same part # for all the years though, part # 52069426 for '02-'06 KJ's.

Maybe you need to get the rear diff also from the same scraggly CO guy where you got the front diff, one with a ARB and 4.10's already installed  .

I just went out there and looked under the hood. The tranny dipstick was out like 6" and there's fluid on top of the engine cover. Do you think fluid shot up the tube and knocked it out (like there's too much) or the fluid came out because the dipstick was not put back in?

Basically, there's tranny fluid everywhere under the hood and under the Jeep. It's a rolling environmental hazard right now.

Possible overfilled with the breather plugged, might want the guy relook at how he "extended" the tranny vent line,it may be plugged and the cause of the fluid shooting out of the dipstick tube, actually I bet that is the problem there.

Dipstick popping out is pretty common on the CRD's. I think there was a thread running around about it over in the CRD forum. Mine has popped out a couple of times, but no tranny fluid.

Well Troy, I am glad you're on our side. I popped the hood and took a look at the breather. It was your standard 5/8" hose with one of those caps they put on breathers. I popped the top off and noticed that there was a lot of gunk crammed under the cap. So much so that it's conceivable it was sealed instead of breathable. I cleaned it out real good and put the cap back on.

It's hard to see since the dipstick is so close to the firewall but I don't see tons of fluid migrating down from the area that would explain the puddles I see on the ground. I am going to run it over to the carwash and pressure clean the underbody and see what it looks like in the AM.

Just so I am armed for conversation, are you saying that if the breather was sealed, it would cause the tech to misread how much fluid is in there? I have also only located one breather extended, I asked them to extend the t case and the tranny. If they ran joined the two breathers and ran one 5/8" hose, would that be a problem? I am not sure if these are high pressure systems.

Thanks guys.
