My biggest interest in this would be to fit the front end with something that isn't as prone to splitting open and leaving me stranded. If I were to shoot for bigger tires then I can see where an SFA would be more practical.

Yeah, these are not dana 30's or any dana axle. They are closer to the Colorado/Canyon/H3 front diff than anything. And I am 99% sure that the only place you will find a D44 under a GC is the rear of a few years, and even the front of the 5.9 had a D30. Heck, the 5.9 isn't crap compared to the newer engines.

When GM spun off numerous pieces ( Delco became delphi, for example), their Saginaw Axle Division became AAM. Many of the AAM axles you see are modern versions of previous Saginaw (usually called "corporate") axles, with their big dogs being descendants of the 14bolt. Chrysler later invested in AAM & began using several of their products, like the WK front diff in question.

The D44 did come in high & low pinion versions and numerous gear ratios/widths. They had a thicker walled HD version and were available in 5,6, or 8 lug. The sensored word aluminum rear was even around. But all of them had 8.5" ring gears.
