Post subject:  KJ Amazed Me Today

Well, a friend and I were bored and decided to just go out to the desert a few miles from my house to play with the KJ. I've been waiting to get my lift and skids before I even tried to go, but decided what the heck. The Liberty truly amazed me. It went up birms and stuff that I wouldnt't have even thought it was capable of. However, a noob mistake really scared me though. I took a bad angle off an embankment and realized it. So when I stopped and put it in reverse, all I heard was the rear tire spinning and a complete lack of movement. So, in my noobiness, I start to freak out fearing imminent death to my Jeep. In my nervousness, I tried to put it in 4LO while in gear and then heard this absolutely horrible thunk which made me think I broke something (worst nightmare). Then, after some clearer thinking I got into 4LO correctly and backed up. However, I now know what lockers and stuff are for and the limitations of my Liberty. It got my heart going for a while and I thought it was a good rookie story to post up here.

Dude if you going to wheel put it in 4lo from the begining. Your tranny stays cooler for one and two.... It takes a few feet for 4lo to engage so if you engage after getting stuck it's not going to engage.

I hardly ever use 4lo. Driving in the desert, or the beach, you just can't go fast enough in 4lo.

I don't know what deserts you've been driving in but if you were driving where we were today there'd be nothing but going slow. And as for 4-Lo being better for your transmission I can attest to that: something happened to my linkage and I couldn't engage the low range of the transfer case. High range was fine but no low range. After only a mile or so of going my 'trans temp' light was on. Thanks to one of the LOST members there (Vern, you da man!) I got hauled up a few hills to keep my tranny from melting.

I was out in the west valley kinda near the White Tanks. There were parts that I would have been going too fast for 4LO. As for it taking a few feet to engage, I must have gotten lucky then, because it got unstuck. Not being familiar with the situation really made me nervous though. I also avoided 4LO because some areas the dirt was so hard it was almost like pavement so I didn't want the driveline binding up.

If the dirt still had enough loose covering to engage 4hi then 4lo should have been fine. Out where Seth was talking about we were crawling on all kinds of rocks where 4lo came in REALLY handy. Keep an eye on the AZ LOST KJ forum and we'll be posting up for some more runs soon. You woulda had a blast if you had gone today :D

Yeah I'll keep an eye on the website. I didn't think my Jeep had enough mods to run with you guys yet but so far I've been absolutely shocked at the capabilities of this thing. I guess I've been hanging around Wrangler owners too long. :P

Corwyyns Jeep with skids and rails went all over everything put in its way Sunday. Very impressive! So don't be shy, come hang with us next time.

Yeah, I just wish someone had gotten a pic of my KJ on that one rock ledge going down towards the coke ovens  That was the same rock area where Travis got real tippy in his TJ (but then, I think Trav is certifiably insane 8) ).

Definitely keep an eye on the AZ LOST section for upcoming runs, and also for developing info on the '07 Fun in the Sun Run - it sounds like it's gonna be a blast!

He has a 2002 and probably has the better tranny ( 45 vs the 42 ). It does not tend to get overheated as easily as the 42.

Yes I have the 45 and I'm grateful for that tranny. Most of the time I hear that 1st year vehicles are bad, but this thing hasn't been the case. And I'll definitely keep an eye on the AZ L.O.S.T. website.

Why do you keep saying that? Is someone disagreeing with you? Just wondering.

Oh. I get it. He's replying to bigrat's comments about which 4WD mode to use in the desert and his comments about the tranny, not mine. It took me a while to get it too.

I don't trust that light. Tallon1 and I used to have that stuipid light come on everytime we would head up the mountain and it did not matter if it was in 4lo, 4hi or 2wd. I think that some of the sensors are a little more sensitive than others. I have had that light come on so many times I had even thought of disconnecting it.
