| Post subject: | Front end problem after muddin |
At about 50mph and above the whole vehicle shakes. It does it even worse if I let off the gas. At first I thought the wheels were just out of balance because off all the mud caked onto them but it is still doing it even after I got most of it off. Also at a full lock turn the drivers side CV joint is making a loud noise. Sounds like somthing rubbing against the boot. The joint was making a clicking noise before I ever took it off road so I may have just made it worse. Just hoping someone with more experiance can tell me what the problem may be. |

AS far as the cv joint goes it's most likely toast if it's making clicking noises and getting worse. As for the vehicle shaking try to get all the mud off(a little will still throw the tire balance off)and if this does not cure it have the tires rebalanced(driving on them full off mud has known to throw the balance off even after being cleaned)and if that doesn't cure it maybe the wheel bearings are worn, loose drive train/suspension parts,or out of balance driveshafts could cause the same effects also.Hope this helps in finding a cure. |

check to be sure you didn't knock a "wheel balance weight" off when you were off road. |

I got most of it off but there is still a good bit of mud stuck to the rims. I'll wash that off today and see if the shaking goes away. Should I be worried about the CV joint or will it be ok as long as I'm not wheelin on it? I don't really have the dough right now to be fixing anything so as long as the wheels not going to fall off or anything I can make due.

You should put your font end up on jack stands and take off your front tires. Drop the skid plate and clean out all the mud that you see. I like to use a wooden stick to scrape off the mud with. Just be very careful around the rubber boots. Pay attention to the back of the brake rotors and the vent holes along the outside edge of the rotors. You might want to use a long thin screwdriver to clean those out. Before you put your tires back on look at the back of the rim and make sure that they are also mud free. Now you can do the same to the rear end If you enjoy driving in lots of mud then this should become a ritual that you do after every mud run. |

If there is any mud in those rims then its going to shake. I really do not know why your cv joints would be going bad b/c it doesnt look like you have a lift. Unless something tore a boot, I wouldnt think they would be bad. |

Just keep driving it...........try the carwash and get the undercarriage treatment. I get the same symtoms after driving in the dunes, I just keep driving and it eventually goes away. I get the same shaking issue with snow and mud |

if after you clean it realy ,realy good it still wants to shake take a look at things like the drive shafts i dont know how hard you were hitting it but i just got back from the local "4X4 shop" and he was showing me a long inner shaft on a YJ that was some how twisted inside the housing i doubt it is that i bent the front shaft on my TJ and it did the same thing so bad that i pulled over and took the shaft off the front just look and see if you have a dent in either the front or back or even a good scrach it is hard to check any thing else with the shaft on the jeep |

I think all the 02s had rear drums. These will be packed with mud. Open these up and flush them out. Just don't touch the break pedal when you have the drums open. |

The steel wheels on the sport are a really poor design, that holds mud, water, anything else that gets behind the face. Just a little mud packed in there will throw wheel balance way off. That's the first place I power wash as soon as I get mine home. You can also pack mud in behind the spindle area and up around the 1/2 shafts. |

I got all the mud off and out of my Jeep today and guess what the shaking is gone. I also figured out what was causing the front end noise. The flap in the wheel well that you can access the corner light bulbs from had popped open and was rubbing the wheel. So good news nothing is broken. Thanks for everyones help. |
