I'm planning on lifting the 03 KJ 4x4 sport in about a month or so but I'm looking to buy some new wheels in the mean time. Will I have any problems running 16x8 wheels with a 4.5" back spacing and 235-70-16 tires on the factory suspension witout any lift? Will it rub at all? I will probably need to drive like this for a least a month since the wheels are gonna take my savings for now. Thanks 8)

Just for the heck of it, which wheels are you wanting?

That tire is kinda small for a lift(28.9). Why not get a 245/70/16 tire(29.5)? They would rub alittle with the 4.5in BS but it wouldnt be bad for a month. It would probably get purty bad off road before a lift though. Why not get the 5" BS?

Or add some spidertrack spacers for the month. (then sell them to me when you get your lift!)

235/70-16s won't rub at all, and I don't think you'll have any problems with the rims either; the new Limiteds are fitted with 17x7.5s, so I can't see the 16x8s being a problem. Do you already have the 235s and just want to get new wheels in advance of the lift? What are you thinking of fitting on them after the lift?

I'm not looking for tires. I was asking if the 235-70 tires would rub with an 8" wheel and back spacing of 4.5"? I know my stock wheels are only 7" wide with a a 5.5 bs so I was just trying to figure out if the 1" wider wheel and the 4.5" back spacing would cause my current tires to rub with the stock suspension.

So to sum it up.... will the wider rims and the 4.5" back spacing cause my current tires to rub with the stock suspension?

Sorry for the confiusion. :)

Yeah I already have the 235's. Just trying to figure out if the 1" wider rim and the 4.5" bs is gonna cause any probs rubbing with the stock ride height.

I don't know, she hasn't picked them out yet. She likes several but hasn't made a decision on what she wants.

My wife is wanting her KJ lifted and some new wheels for her birthday this month. So I am looking at going with probably a 2" lift and will keep the 235-70-16 Dueler AT Revo's that I just put on there like 3 weeks ago (new). I have already saw a KJ with 2" and 235's and thought the lift and tire setup looked great. I didn't think the 235's looked to small for the 2" lift at all - But I also think my 98 XJ looks great with the 3.5" lift and 30's. Every time I lift a jeep or truck I never stuff the largest tire I can fit on them cause I like a nice balance of lift and tire.

Thanks for the replies everyone. :)

So nobody knows if the 235's will rub with an 8" wheel and 4.5" back spacing? :(

MHO is that if they do it won't be much, I run a 255/70/R16 BFG Mud-Ter on AMerican Eagle Wheel that are 16x8x5 and they rub on the pinch weld cover and the front bumper. Thus my guess would be that yours probably won't..but if they do it will happen at full lock while in reverse or having to make a tight turn into a parking spot, otherwise I think you'll be alright.

Thanks for the reply. What wheels are those that you have?

I do not believe they will rub harley72. The BS will take it farther away from the suspension so it will not rub that. It may rub the pinch seem and foglight door when turning or rear door when flexing. But with a 29in tire I do not think it will.

I am not going to argue this point if anyone contests it, but here goes anyway.
(Looks up some specs before you argue if you decide to)

An 8" rim is too wide for a 235 tire.

Does this mean it wont work? No. It will work, but it will not be as good as if you stick with a 7" rim.

Always match your tires and wheels. There is no sense in buying new stuff if its not going to be the best for you. A 7" rim with a 4" backspace will put your tire in about the same position as the 8" with a 5" BS.

What do you mean by an 8" is not going to be "as good" as a 7" rim? Would you care to explain why the 7" is better than the 8"? Because I don't know but would like to know. And I'm not trying to be sarcastic. :)

Now I'm not trying to say that your wrong and that there is no difference or that one might not be better than the other but I do know that it will work and work fine for my wife's jeep. But I still don't know why it wouldn't be "as good".

When I went to my local tire shop and priced out some wheels they told me that with these tires I could go with either a 7 or 8" rim. I guess I'm trying to figure out what you know that my local national tire shop doesn't know.

Thanks
P.S.
I am seriously looking to learn something here so please don't take this post in a bad way. 8)

I have American Eagle Series 137 Wheels, they are 16"x8" w/ 5" backspace, they currently have BFG 255/70/R16 Mud-Terrain T/A rubber on them. HEre is a link to what other available sizes for this rim they have:

Those are cool wheels. Where did ya get them and if you don't mind - how much were they? Do you have a side view of your jeep with the wheels?
Where are some good on-line places to get wheels at?

I actually bought my Jeep brand new with these wheels already on it, the dealer had used this Kj as a demo and had put some modifications on it to help sell it...which it did, to me. My guess would be they are about $185-200/pc maybe less, maybe more. You might check tirerack.com, they sometimes do tire and wheel deals where you get both for a discounted price. They might have something you like paired together. If not check your local 4wheelparts.com location or 4x4 shop and they might be able to help ya out. Here are a couple of side pics with the wheels though....

Those wheels kind of look like these that I have been thinking about buying. I can't see these two pics that you just posted. My company really has things locked down tight on the web. And I am even the computer tech here. Tell me that don't suck. They push these settings down through the active directory system from a different state and us techs here can't even bypass them with admin rights.
