Post subject:  Diff guard question

I am going to be getting a diff guard soon. I would like to put it on myself. Am I correct that the sealant on the diff will hold the cover once I have removed the bolts? I don't want to have diff fluid leaking out while I try bolting on the diff guard. By the way, I'll probably be getting the Rusty's diff guard. Anyone have this one and would like to comment on it, I would appreciate it.

Yes, it takes some force to get it off even after you take out all of the bolts.

Yeah again, you should have no problem. That diff cover shouldn't move at all.

5 bolts? I guess I'll have to surf over to Rusty's and see what kind of guard for the 8.25 has only 5 bolts?

FWIW, I can't comment (obviously) on Rusty's diff guard but I can say in my opinion, there is no better diff guard than Poision Spyder's Rock Ring. I have it and feel completely at ease knowing it's down there. The only thing some say is better, is a actual diff cover (guard) from Crane. The choice is yours.

EDIT: Been there, saw it. If you buy it, good luck.

I'll admit the Poison Spyder ring is pretty heavy duty but I have reservations about it because it still leaves a large area uncovered. It would seem to me that if a guard doesn't cover the entire diff at least the most likely place to incur damage would be from the bottom up (Rusty's), not just from one side like the Poison Spyder. Though I wish Rusty's also had the recessed bolts.

Well with Spyder's Rock Ring, the only thing that will get into the diff cover would be a well aimed bullet. The recessed bolts aren't for looks. You will slide over rocks without ripping off the guard. Many guards regardless of style, have raised frames which can / will rip away from your dif. Rusty's appears to be of that type.

Hey David,

I installed the Rusty's diff guard in just a few minutes. It only leaked about a table spoon of fluid when the 5th bolt came out. Tighten it in a star pattern just like lug nuts to 30 ft-lbs. Wipe it clean after you're done. If more fluid appears loosen all the diff cover bolts and retorque them in a star pattern. Sometimes the cover will get a little out of whack when only the bottom bolts are taken out and re-installed. The Rusty's diff guard comes with longer hex bolts. I can loan you my torque wrench if you'd like,, I work in Edgewood, near exit 77.

George, any chance you could post a photo of your Rusty's diff cover installed? The picture on their website looks pretty ugly, because it's bare metal. I assume that the production version is painted or powdercoated, right?

The real question is, when did you last change your gear lube?

Anyone know if the Poison ring comes in colors or primer. I'm having some body work done and would like to get it color matched if it doesn't come that way. Any savings on ordering it unpainted?

They come in black powdercoating. If you call them you might be able to ask for a bare one. Later...Clint

do you have to take all the bolts off to put on the poison spider?

I can't tell by the pics if this guard goes all the way around, but if it doesn't, you can try to add the guard without removing your cover. Sometimes they leak, sometimes they don't. Just keep an eye on the diff for leaking.

Yes, that's one of the advantages fo the poison spider diff guard--any impacts are distributed evenly across the entire circumferance of the diff.

The gasket stuff is like glue, though, so the diff cover won't actually come off unless you pry it off. You may bet some leaking, like Adam said, but not enough to cause any problems.
