| Post subject: | Upper CV boot replacement? |
Help? I don't know anything about CVs. I've loosened up the boot, removed the c-clip and ball bearings are everywhere. Does the piece on the axle have to be pulled off the splines? I'm five minutes away from going and buying two new assemblies. |

hmmmm I'm not sure what you mean mutt. I think you mean the cage that hold the balls in place. You you have to take it off! you need 2 small screwdrivers to push the clip back off the axle (yes it stays inside the cage you can't pull it out...just push it so you can slide the cage off) |

No, the lower inside the cage, that rides on the splines. |

Oh gosh. What were you doing taking the boots off? Did one get torn or something? Anyway, I would remove the CV from the jeep so you can work on it. Depending on which side it is, it should just pull out of the diff. If its on the passenger side, then the coil over needs to come out so it will clear it. Ive never had a CV apart, so I cannot help you after that. If they just fell out, then I would assume they could be cleaned up and put back in? Be sure to put grease back in. Edit: For when you do put that limited slip in, a very good write up: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=179 |

Yeah, I've got a torn boot, drivers side inner. Figured while I was in there adding the TrueTrac and some more lift via Rusty's strut plate, I'd fix the boot also. Whoa, this job should not be taking me this long.......SFA here I come. |

It's not so much getting the balls back in, but getting the old boot off and the new boot on. The diff and the passenger side are buttoned up, just waiting on the drivers side. |

If you take the spindle off, you can just pull the cv axle out of the diff. I guess you know that though since you had to take them out to put the LS in. Can you just do that and work on it out of the jeep? Or maybe that what your doing? Idk? Something Ive always wondered, what holds the cv joint together? Just the boot? So when I pop the top balljoint out and let the spindle swing down, what keeps the balls from falling out into the boot? |

I've got the whole assembly out of the KJ. Once you pull the upper boot off, there is a reatining ring, C clip, that holds the CV in the housing. I took that out, slid the CV out of the housing and all the balls came out. There is a part on the shaft that must be pressed on, because I've tried many things and can't get it off. Drove around town and manned the phones trying to find someplace open with a press, no luck. Tomorrow is another day. It looks "really" tall now with the Rusty's top plate. Of course I'll have to drive it and get it to settle down before I know what it did. That and adding the extra weight of the skid plates. Right now it is 38.5" to the bottom of the wheel well and 19" to the pinch weld. I'm hoping it comes down about an inch. |

ok that part on the shaft comes off but there is a clip on the inside close to the shaft you have to push apart. You only have a small hole to get to it. (the clip stays on the inside of the the piece you need to take off.) Thats if you are talking about the boot that is close to the diff. I've never worked on the one thats close to the wheel. |

Thanks. I just never looked for the lock ring on the back side of the splined piece of the ball cage. Sheesh, I'm a CV master now. |
