Post subject:  Clevis Lift Question

I am about to perform a clevis lift   . I notice a pretty good write up of it in the tech section :D , but no pictures :( . Has anyone recorded the event with pictures? If so, please post.

Questions:
Does the front end need alignment after a clevis lift?

Should I do the clevis lift before or after the LBJ recall?

I am looking to get the Rusty's Strut Plate for an additional 1/2" of lift. Should I wait on the clevis until after this is installed?

Thanks,

Sorry I have no pictures for you But...

Yes

Should I do the clevis lift before or after the LBJ recall?
With as picky as Chrysler is on warranty work. I would wait.

Save on tear down and install time. Do them both together. You will also need a realignment after you install the strut Plate too.

all the above seems to stand true how ever I have not had the front end aligned after a 3/8 clevis lift and after about 1000 miles I have seen no reason to worry
the "sipes" in the tires are still flat wich means the tire is hitting the ground like it should
I would think between the 2 ,however, that may call for an alignment

and as far as the LBJ recall dont even worry about it because by law they must replace the recalled part regardless of miles or mods
or "condition"
If they refuse and a week later you get killed cause the LBJ failed that they refused to replace then "look out"

just look at it like this you could have a ford POS with 150,000 miles on it if they recall it because the seat may stop moving then ford cannot say that your car is to old or has to many miles on it and we are not going to fix it

A word of caution- I set my toe to .20 degrees and after doing a 3/8" Clevis it changed it to .55 degrees putting it out of spec. As you raise the front end the tie rods droop more and pull in causing too much positive toe.

A word about wording KJ's dont have tie rods the last time I checked they have rack and pinion but no rod that ties the left and right togeather
a very common mistake

Uhh, yea they do. Thats what connects the rack and pinion to the spindle.

It is not called a tie rod from what I read only SFA can have a tie rod

I doubt it, in our shop we wouldn't even pay attention to that.
I haven't had the opportunity to do LBJ's on a Liberty yet but based on the configuration I would remove the spindle, replace the joint, re install the spindle and set alignment.

Hmm, I was trying to think back to when I changed out my balljoints. Unless they think its a safety hazard, they shouldnt need to do anything to that area. All you do is pop the upper and lower balljoints along with, well, whatever you want to call the thing that turns the spindle.(tie rod ends :D )

Im not sure if they call it a tierod end or not jason. Thats what Ive always seen it called on here, so thats why I call it that. :?

Maybe you are thinking that a rack and pinion unit does not have the various steering linkage like a standard steering gear does and thats true, no idler or pitman arms or center links, drag links and such but they do have tie rods. 2 inners and 2 outers.
The one in the picture is a left inner.

Not a very good image but it might help to see, more can be found here

I stand corrected
I have only heard the rod that ties the two tires togeather on sfa called a tie rod
but thinking back to my IFS ranger that is what they called them tierod ends
