--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A weekend on Stockton beach (loose sand and dunes up to about 130 feet high) has me a bit worried about my 2005 3.7lt petrol auto KJ's capabilty in the sand. Aired my 245/70R17s ST's down to 18 psi and off into the dunes 2nd gear high, after about 20 minutes moderate wheeling the Trans Temp warning light came on. Stopped, lifted the bonnet and checked for burnt smells... seemed ok. Re-started engine and let idle in N for about ten minutes, turned off and re started, light was now off. Another ten minutes and ditto same story over again. I also tried using full time 4WD in 2nd gear OD off same problem. Great day but spoilt by the amount of time spent waiting for the trans to cool down. Rang dealer and he said DOH...
Someone suggested low range 4WD but with the highest dunes I had to get up to about 70 KM/hr to get to the top which would have pushed the revs a bit high for my comfort.
Any comments... Ideas... Similar experences... :?:

the problem was that you were using 2nd gear not first and you were in 4hi not 4lo
remember that when your jeep changes gears it slips and that slipage causes heat that along with the load put on the drive train from the larger tires with less air and the rolling resistance caused by the sand is what caused the trans to over heat

we never go off road and use 4hi only 4lo we have wheeld very slow and go trails for 3+ hours with the ac on in 95+ heat with hill climbs so steep you can hardly walk them with out sliping and I cannot tell you what the trans temp light looks like

Hes right. You could get a bigger cooler to help keep it cool. But the shifting of the tranny and the lower psi adds alot of heat.

Leaving it in second is what made it overheat. Use 4hi and put it in drive. I have run dunes all day without overheating the tranny. 12-18 psi
