Post subject:  Torn propeller shaft boot ?

I need to know what this is so I can replace it. Hopefully I can describe it without a pic because I don't have one at the moment. I think it'll be obvious, I just don't want to sound like an idiot when i call the dealer to try and get the part :-)

Where the front drive shaft attaches to the transfer case, there is a rubber disc. I think this is a CV boot since the shaft is not attached with a U-joint, but I'm not sure if that's what it's called. Anyhow, mine is trashed. Some insulation fell off the floor above it and got wound all around the drive shaft joint and tore the crap out of the 'boot'. I found this becuase I heard a lot of grinding one day when I shifted to 4wd! I have filled the joint with grease, and am not running in 4wd until I get the rubber peice replaced. My problem is I looked in my shop manual and it doesn't list this piece seperately. It has a propeller shaft/transfer case joint assembly, but not the individual peices. I'm hoping I can just clean out the joint, replace the rubber bit, and be done with it.

So, is it a 'front transfer case cv boot' or something else that I need to be asking DC for? and has anyone else had this happen?

It's not the CV boot, CV boot is what attaches your half axle shafts to the front differential (two of them, inner and outer). Not sure what the part is called, though. Hopefully somebody will know what that part is called.

That's what my problem is. I'm sure that joint is a CV joint (as a joint type), but since it is not the axle joint that we are all used to calling CV joints generically, I'm not sure what to call it.

Revise - Here is my guess

"Companion Flange Rubber Disc on the tranfer case side of the front propeller shaft"

and they do call them CV's in the manual

Does Not say what it is - and does not show a particluar part number.

Here is a page fron the Parts list.

Looking at my '03 FSM it looks like it is called a dust boot. Covers the part of the propeller shaft where it joins the companion flange going into the t-case.

Just to keep things straight. According to DC The driveshafts come out of the diffs and atach to the wheels. The propeller shaft join the transfer case to the diffs.

This is the front propeller shaft joining to the front diff.

I am not sure what the part is but CV, means constanstant velocity, That is just a particular joint and not only limited to the front axles. i.e. CVs can be used on drives shafts too.

Thanks guys!

Those pictures are exactly it. The main reason I want to know what to ask for is so I can call the dealer. Unfortunately my closest one is not that convenient to 'just drop by' so I want to call and make sure they have it first.

I like kjhawaii's rewording, but i just keep getting hung up on the fact that the joint is a CV whether they state that in the manual or not, but I expect them to think drive shafts if I use that acronym :-)

I'll try to muddle through a phone call and if they don't understand then I'll print one of these pictures out and go show them what i need.

Oh, I just noticed the pic, it's not the 'companion flange' as shown by item 2. It's actually around the shaft in the part attached to the shaft where they are identifying the bolts.

You guys are gonna love this...

First, parts guy at DC says it's a "dust boot' - ok, now we know.

Second, "it's not a servicable part" !

DC doesn't have the boot, or even any parts for the flange assembly, or even the flange assembly itself available for dealers to order. The only think they had listed in thier database was the entire front propeller shaft including the flange assemblies on both ends!. The official statement is replace the whole thing for $500 !

The guy at the service counter told me that was ridiculous and gave me the name of a shop that builds shafts for them when they work on older vehilces. Said they should be able to help me. I haven't contacted them yet, but wtf with DC saying this isn't servicable???? Guess that explains why none of the after market parts dealers list anything either, but still, it doesn't make any sense to me.

I think I'll pull the shaft and remove the torn boot so I can show people what I need and hope I can find something to make do.
