ok i see a lot of stuff about lift and tires an the d#*@ alm. front diff breaking
has anyone regeared their KJ? i know that with a dana 35 they are more prone
to break with bigger tires but for the most part the guys running 33" tires on a D35
who have regeared to 4.56 or better have a far smaller breakage % than those who do not
i know that it has to do with torque and all that and that is what breaks the KJ front diff

i know that on the YJ/TJ D35 every time i have seen one break, and i have seen a lot,it was when they had to realy
"hammer down" to climb an obsticle that i and the guys with lower gears almost idel up
i am by no means a mechanic but from the looks of the numbers with over drive on the auto could almost be good with 4.56's and stock tires ( about 2800 rpm at 70 mph) or about the same as a TJ with 30" tires 3.73's and a 3
speed auto
any thoughts from the guys who have been around the KJ stuff longer?

I am pretty sure that the only lower gears you can get for the front diff are the 4.10's that came in the 4cyl. KJ's and only available from Jeep. You can only go as low as 4.56 on the 8.25 rear also but no 4.56's to match for front diff. So unless the aftermarket steps up and makes 4.56's for the front, we are stuck w/ 4.10's for now.

Someone ordered them a while back and found out the hard way that they don't work. RRO is actually selling the same gear sets for steel D30s but saying they can be used in our aluminum diff. I am not a mechanic so hopefully someone else can explain why they won't work.

The one's on RRO's site will not fit the front. They sent 4 or 5 different sets of gears for the front with no luck. You have to find a low milage front diff from a 4 cylinder. Their 4.10 gears for the rear work great, they're from Randy's Ring and Pinion. Make sure you get the rebuild kit.

Looks like Rocky Road now sells 4.56 gears for both front and rear. Are you postive that these won't work on the front diff?

The Dana 30A pinion gear in the front have longer shafts than the reg. Dana 30. This is what I was told a while back by a guy at Dana. I belive no after market company has gear sets yet. I have swapped in the 4.10, they work fine, but I need 4.56's with the 33's.

You have to take what Rocky Road says with a grain of salt. They still sell the OTT lift. Of course if you don't take your KJ off-road and drive like an old lady it works great.

The truth of the re-gearing issue is that 3.73 gears work well with 31" tires. If you look at a chart that gives a range of options then you will see the 3.73 at one side of acceptable and the 4.10 at the other side. You would only want 4.56 gears if you are putting on 33's or 35's.

They list the 4.10's and 4.56's for the Dana 30, not the Dana 30A, which is what is in the front of the Liberty. They also told me that one of their employees had a Liberty, and replaced the Chrysler 8.0" gears in the front to get 4.10's. The 8.0" gears were one of the 4 or 5 sets of front gears they sent while the front end of my jeep was on torn apart for 3 weeks.

some of the mopar distributors have the gears for a lot cheaper than the dealer. Of course you have to pay for the labor if you don't do it yourself.

Check it out

I have yet to find a trashed 4cyl to get them from. Considering they sold like 4, it might be a while.[/url]
