| Post subject: | Cleaning The Underside |
Hey guys! I wheeled my KJ for the first time tonight and I was wondering if anyone had any usefull tips and tricks for cleaning the underside of my Jeep. If anyone has a process that seems to work well for them, please share that too. I've never cleaned the underside of a 4WD before. I used to own a airbagged trying-to-be-show-truck S-10 pickup, and I was ANAL about getting the underside spotless. I do know that if you powerwash it too close it strips the black protective finish off of the frame. I ended up having the frame powdercoated after that little incident. That cost a pretty penny. Anyway; thanks for the info! |

I usually pull it up on a curb at the house and pressure wash it all really good. Ive never had a problem taking the black paint off?? If i want to get it really good, Ill add soap to the feed in the pressure washer. |

Power washer works well. However, if you really have LOTs of mud I find it is best to take off some of the skids. Mud has a tendency to really clump up in there and it is hard to wash out. Especially the front skid plate. |

Before going "mudding" spray some baby oil, WD-40, cooking oil underneath the body. This will defiantly make it easier when washing off all those pounds of mud. I've used the sprinkler method to clean it as well. |

You can pull the mud out of your rear bumper too. |

OK, so I cleaned the underside today. Tomorrow I'll do the outside/detail and interior. Anyways; I used some "Power Purple", which I'm guessing is like Simple Green? It's what my dad used to use on... everything. So I sprayed everything and let the Purple stuff sit for maybe 5 or 10 minutes, then I used a wide spray on the hose nozzle and tried to get everything I could. Then I sprayed in all of the hard to reach places using a bunch of different angles to get as much as I could out. I kept spraying until the water went from red (VA Red Clay… it sucks), to cloudy, and then finally to clear. I feel pretty satisfied that I got all of it out that I could. Then I used a white cotton rag to get the wheel wells nice and clean. And by the way, the Purple Power stuff is biodegradable. Thanks for the advice guys… |

It does a real good job. I use it to clean up motor oil spills when I change the oil in my Jeep, since I do it on our carport. I just spray a bunch of it on and let it sit, then hose it off real good. I feel better about the dogs being arround it since it's supposed to be pretty safe. |

OK guys, here's the finished product. Sorry about the crappy pictures. There isn't a single AA battery to be had in my house, so I used the little web cam thing on the top of my laptop. My neighbor kept looking at me funny when I was taking them...
