I need a spare but I doubt the door will handle a tire almost double the weight . Has any one figured this out using some extension and offset so it will still mount up on the back. I suppose I could throw it up in the wilderness carrier but that will create a lot of wind noise I expect and some resistance to a already gas guzzuling monster . |

My rear door has been holding a 33 inch for a little over 3 months, and before that the 31 inch MTR, 10 ply, and they are heavy for around a year. The door is giving up it rattles now, and the glass is starting to rub the door. So it will go a while, but it will wear the sheet metal. I was working on a rear bumper using a 4 inch c channel, but got side tracked with the lift. Got as far as welding a trailer axel to the channel, and fabbing up a tire holder. Al |

I thought I heard of someone fabbing up a mount in the rear cargo area. That's probably your only other choice besides the roof and an aftermarket rear bumper like Rock Lizards. |

Wish I had pics, but I had a mount in the rear cargo area. I used the small side of the rear seat that folds down ( so you couldn't sit on that side but you could use the rest of the seat. I made a bracket that attached where the seat normally attached when in the upright position, the "tie down hook area" in the cargo area and the seat leg bolt hole where the bottom of the seat attaches. The tire ended up mostly in the passenger section and left open most of the cargo area... |

hmmm, I never thought about the spare tire holder not being strong enough. I stand on top of it all the time when I need to use the rails. Maybe I shouldn't do that. |

There is no good solution. I wish someone would/could make a door strengthener like they do for TJs. It reinforces the door enough to hold bigger tires without wearing anything. |

Anybody taken the plastic part off the inside of the rear door? Would it be possible to put some kind of double I beam or something in there to distribut the weight a little better? |

I have the stock wheel with 265/75/16 goodyear mt on mine for about 1 year befire that it was 235/85/16 . I had to add a 1" spacer to the tire mount to clear the window.it still there and it has no started to loosen up yet. I just added a set of 2" spacers to the wheels and am back to pinch weld rubbing when backing up at full turn. Just took off the 1" spacers to put on the wifes LJ with here 2"BB so she can run 32/11.50/15 with the 2" they stuff flex and dont rub but at full turn it rubs the outside tire on the pinch weld (backing up ) anyone seen that before. |

So with a 1 inch spacer you had no problems mounting a 256 75 16 Goodyear M/T.....................great, I'll be mounting mine up tomorrow. You also , if I understand what you are saying, had no problems running the same 265 75 16 M/T's on a stock wheel, but had all the same rubbing issues that the rest of us are experiencing with a two inch spacer ? With the two inch they stuff flex o.k as you say, so what were the stock wheels like during full stuff flex ? And did you try a 1 Inch spacer to see what it is like ? I still have my stock rims, but I'd hate to discard the brand new Mickey Thompson classic lock wheels !! Robert |

I've been carrying a 265/75/16 8 ply TrXus on my tailgate for over 2 1/2 yrs. now with no problems. I just used thick washers to space the tire carrier out so the flip glass would open and shut. |

Skipperb, How did you like the 235x 85x 16's? what tires were they? and what modifications did you have to make to allow them to fit? |

RRO has a tire relocation bracket that moves the tire farther from the door and up a bit as well. Mine works well http://www.rocky-road.com/kjtirespace.html |

Why hasn’t anyone come up with an idea similar to the Jeep Wrangler one? I’m not a fabricator or else I’d get right on it.

I don't know if my Jeep was just messed up or not - but when I got it the spare seemed a bit cockeyed sitting on the tailgate - like the mount was bent or something. I was beginning to wonder if it had been rear-ended at some point before I had it. I decided to pull of the mount and switch it around. After I did that I had much more clearance between glass and tire. Although I was running stock tires, doing this may give you some extra clearance. Or maybe for some reason mine was taken off and reversed before I bought it and I just put it back to the way it was supposed to be. Might be worth a try though... |
