Post subject:  UPDATED: Help me decide which wheel/tire package

Please help me decide which wheel and tire package I should get. I am looking at buying things used to help cut down costs.
Option 1 will cost me about $550 from a local seller for a set of 4. The rims are in decent condition and the tires have about 60% tread.
Option 2 will cost me about $350 for the rims and $200 for the tires (70% tread) for a set of 5 + the mounting costs.
Option 3 will cost me about $600 for the brand new tires and no new wheels.
Thanks for the input!

Well - thanks for all who gave their $.02. I went ahead and picked up the Moab rims with the Goodyear 245/75/16 MT/Rs.
I put them on tonight and took a couple of pics:

More pics to come!

I voted for the BFGs, but it all depends on your priorities? Road noise? Mud traction? Ice? Rock Climbing?

Yeah - I understand what you mean.

I will be mostly doing road driving and I will be off-road on occasion, but not too often. I originally wanted the BFG's but I was offered a few deals locally that I think I may need to act on quick if I want to get them. From what I understand though, the Dunlop Rovers are more like AT's than true MT's... Am I right here? Anybody with experience with the Dunlops?

i voted for the moab wheels and MTR's but after reading your post about driving mostly road, i'll have to say go with the BFG's they will be easier on your gas mileage and not quite as loud. But still with the moab rims.

I have no experience with the Dunlops. but I'm gonna agree with gone_jeepin here. I think the BFGs would serve your application well. The MTRs are very cool, but not great for commuting.

I just know that whatever I get is not going to be permanant - meaning in 50K miles I will need to replace new tires anyways right? I would like the Moab rims for looks, but can't really afford to do both at the current time. My ideal package would be to get the Moab rims and then get the BFG's too, but unless someone want's to donate to the Gordo tire fund, this isn't going to happen.

Thanks for the responses so far - keep em coming. I'm interested to hear what you have to say.

When I was researching tires I checked out the Dunlops. Couldn;t really find a good review on them. For a few bucks more at Sam's I got the BFG MTs. They are great and look really sweet on my Cragar soft 8s. My second vote would be for the Moabs and MTRs. Or you could keep your stock rims, throw some MTRs or Dunlops or BFGs etc.... with 1" Spidertrax spacers on to avoid rub.

I had the Dunlop Mud Rovers on my Frontier. They were ok. they were a little loud (to be expected) but they wore great I got alot of miles out of them and they were still on the truck when I traded it in. If I were going to buy new tires right now though I would go with the General Grabber AT2 they have gotten some great reviews and from my research they cant be beat for the price.

They are getting there - may or may not pass inspection this month (haven't measured tread depth yet). They are also stock size and I want to go bigger now that I am lifted. Plus we all know how bad those Goodyears suck...

I love my BFGs, and wish I could have bought the MOAB Rims - I ended up getting the cheap black steel 15" and 15" bfgs. Take a look the 31.10.5 15 bfgs - Do you have a costco around there???

To keep it cheap - I only bought 4 rims and tires, then put a cover over my best stock tire as a spare.

I do - but I understand that they won't put bigger tires on a KJ since it goes out of stock spec. I guess I could take wheels in and have them mount them on the wheels and not specify a vehicle...does the work?

How much were your wheels/tires after all was said and done if you don't mind me asking? I know that the non-metric tires are usually $40-50 cheaper for some stupid reason...

I voted for the Moabs and the MT/Rs. The Mud Rovers in 265/75R16 are going to rub like crazy until you do some cutting. My MT/R's have about 25k miles and still have about 50% tread so they can last quite a while if taken care of properly. If you do go with the MT/Rs, make sure you rotate and balance them every 3k miles.

This is exactly what I did only at Sam's when I bought my BFG MTs for just over $109/tire mounted and balanced. That way you don't have to wait around all day for them to finish the job either. Pretty slick....

I made an offer on the Moabs + MT/Rs last night so hopefully the guy accepts my offer. Thanks for the good advice on rotating tires. I'll be sure to have that done. The tires I would be getting seemed to have worn quite well, so that is good and should get me off on the right foot.

Thanks to everyone who has replied - I appreciate all of your input.

It's funny...
At the rate we're going, there will be more KJ's with Moabs than Rubi's.

 Dang funny. If I'd have been drinking soda, that would have hurt. But I was drinking water, so, no harm done except to my keyboard. Clean that up later.
