Post subject:  INSTALLED! 4.10 gears, ARB Locker, Detroit TrueTrac

Okay, here are my initial reactions…

The 4.10 gears are about perfect for the 245/75/16 MTRS and probably the 265/75 size as well. I really feel like I got some power back…maybe a little more than stock. I can actually accelerate in 4th gear (auto trans) which I wasn’t able to do even before the bigger tires. It was difficult to even maintain speed in that top gear before switching to the 4.10s. From a stop I actually broke the back tires loose today (I had problems doing that in gravel before)!

I wouldn’t call the TrueTrac “invisible” by any means, but nothing to be worried about. The steering up front is a little heavier now even when I’m not in 4 wheel drive. You can definitely feel the wheel snap back to center when you come out of corners. Also, I do get some tire chirp when I’m in tight corners. The TT manual says “TrueTrac differentials are unique in that they increase traction but do not affect steering.” I’d say that’s BS, but if you can deal with a lift and mud tires there’s nothing to be concerned about here.

On road the ARB is invisible as you’d expect. I have engaged it and everything is sealed up nice and tight. Obviously, I’ll have more to say about the ARB after I get back from the next trip. I don’t expect anything but great performance though.

I sure would like to do that to my KJ. Make sure to get us some pictures of the ARB testing.

I'm with you Skyjump136 - the ARB is completely invisable. Even offroad I was checking twice to see if it was engaged or not!

Is yours a petrol or CRD ?

The 4.11 gears are sweet. I'd like to get a set of those put in too. The auto CRD comes with 3.73's and the 2.5lt CRD AND 2.5lt Petrol both come with 4.11's from the factory.

Mine's gas (petrol). With the CRD and 4.1 it would really move.

Wow, I would love to regear and keep my 30's on. Like you said, you cannot speed up at all in 4th and I didnt like the downshifts at all..

So the true trac has actually caused your tires to chirp on the front? Well to me that sounds like a good thing  , means that it is going to transfer torque very well offroad. 8)

I was thinking about getting a TrueTrac for the front of my XJ, but the app guide says you must use locking hubs or a lock-out hub kit to do so.

Sounds to me like it would be just fine, without a $700-$1100 hub conversion kit.

I was thinking the same thing. In fact, I NEVER heard anything out of the Auburn LSD I previously had in the back...made me wonder if it was doing anything at all.

I'm going to try to make the run this weekend, but I doubt I'll have enough miles to warrent changing fluid before that. When should I change it anyway? I was thinking 1500 miles the first time around. Less? More?

I was told to run the fluid for 500 miles(short runs at low speed, like breaking in the engine)so the gears can heat cycle a few times and get there wear pattern set and then change the fluild and you'll be fine.Anybody heard anything different about breaking in new gear sets?

I've always heard 500 miles. Hope you can make it, this trail will be the perfect test for your new stuff. Hope your skids are ready for some attention.:D

In two wheel drive with my old KJ and a DTT up front it didn't make any noticeable difference while driving...In FullTime you could feel it and it did pull back to center...you just have to keep your hands on the wheel...not that bad at all. I never had the front tires bind up or chirp...just slightly heavier steering input while in FullTIme.

OffRoad it rocked...literally...felt like a locker up front.

So should I come out this weekend or just take it easy for 500 miles? I'll probably only have a couple hundred miles on by Sunday (maybe).

I'm not a gear guy, but for as much money as you spent, I would either take it for some nice leisurely drives on the highway after work the next couple of days to get that mileage up (if you really want to hit the trail), or play it safe and not go. I would really stick to the break in period and check everything out first before hitting a trail as challenging as Chinaman's Gulch. I would hope you could make it just to hear your excitement with how much your performance has improved especially on this trail, but there will be plenty more trail runs. Maybe we can try to do something like China Wall for our October trail run/meeting. OK, sorry getting off topic, but that reminds me I better get to posting the next trail run.

Well, maybe I'll just drive out there (to put some miles on), but ride along with someone else. That trail does look like it is going to put some stress on our rigs.

Yeah right ! :P As if one could resist after driving out all that way !! :P

Just go for it mate, the lockers are'nt going to 'wear in' if you rack up freeway miles , hit the trails, I did & its all good !!
